Reputation Level: | New to Koi Hi folks,
thought it was about time I posted, been lurking and soaking up info for a few weeks and still not scratched the surface of the info on here.
Until recently my passion has been Falconry and breeding Falcons but due to being very busy business wise, I found myself without the time to devote to my birds so something had to give. The birds went out to other breeders and all my pens came down, leaving a nice chunk of clear garden (you can see where this is going).
So, decided to put a small pond where the pens were and deck around it, that was until I started doing some reading and got bitten by the koi bug.
Hole was dug, bottom drain in, concrete poured and blocks laid to within 2 courses of the top. The original plan was 10' x 8, x 5' deep, 2' in ground. I say original because now I've stood back and looked at it I have got that other bug, bigger pond syndrome. Once the weather improves a bit, one end wall is coming out and another 5' is going on the length and then I'll hopefully be happy. Not 100% decided on filtration yet, was going to go the Multicyclone and Bead route but may go vortex and multi bay now.
Anyway, enough waffle, hope to be able to contribute to the site as things progress.
Shaun. |

first of all welcome to the forum, how many times have i heard this said bigger is better or i must go bigger lol. i built my last pond 18 months ago now and its 2400 gallons and trust me i so wish i had gone bigger which i could of easy. as for the filter system, i went estro sieve and bead filter of which im very happy with now. i also added a bakki shower last spring which is also a good add on system. alot of people go the nexus route which some get on very well with. what i would say is try and get out and see as many set ups and running ponds and then make your own mind up. where about do you live as some people on here may well be willing to let you see there ponds.

I'm in Lincolnshire Mark but don't mind a drive anywhere to do a bit of research and have a natter. I'm up and down the country a couple of times a week for work. |
