Dear All
I have just joined this forum as I need to learn more about how to take care of my Koi. When I moved to my new house a year ago, I inherited the koi that came with it. My koi are mature, the previous owner told me he has had them for 20 years now and I also have a sturgeon who is more than 3 foot long. Recently my biggest koi has shown swelling on the right hand side of his belly. He can swim quite ok and is certainly not bent in half. He is eating well and loves his sweetcorn. Could he have swim bladder disease? Should I start the lot of them on an anti parasite treatment or an anti fungal one? I'm just not sure how I can make him better? Also, a friend recommended that I feed them less dry koi/sturgeon food and more green veg but they dont seem to like peas at all. Will feeding them sweetcorn at this time of the year harm them and if so, pls suggest an alternative? Sorry for the long post but I would appreciate any advice I could get, my fish are beauties and I want to make sure my black koi gets the best chance possible of fighting this!
Cheers
Sunita.

what i would do is let people know where you are roughley and see if anyone could come over to help you if you are unsure.dont go throwing treatments at them for the sake of it. just as a matter of course have you done a scrape yet and what are your water perameters like.
John, thank you for replying. As a newbie help is very much appreciated! I'm in North London, New Southgate N11. I have no idea how to do a scrape and will look to post water q parameters when I get home after work tonight. He's been bloated for two weeks now and doesn't look any better or worst. My fish in general also still seem very active..is feeding them sweetcorn bad at this stage of the year?
I would not feed my koi sweetcorn at this time of year as water temp is low and fish are not as active as summer.you realty want to be feeding wheatgerm koi pellets now if you are not heated.
Now the koi could have a swim bladder problem or could be dropsey or anything for that matter a photo of the fish in question could be helpful.
Hi John
Here are pictures of Blacky (I know we're not very creative with our names!). I put him in a bucket with a 32 inch diameter so I could take a picture of him but this was only for one minute as I took the picture as he's about 30 inches himself! He's swollen on one side still but is swimming fine and eating well. Not dropsy I think as my shubunkin had that a couple of months ago and the symptoms are not the same.
Am testing WQ parameters at the moment but my husband cleverly lost the instructions for the Bladgon nitrate test kit. Does anyone have these at hand please?
hiya first of all your black koi is not a koi its a mirror carp which you find in our lakes and rivers. feeding sweetcorn is a no no at this time of year, i would try feeding wheatgerm koi food. how long has this fish been like this and have you started doing any thing different to your pond or feeding them. mirror carp do get very big bellys when in the wild from eating so much.

Hi Mark
Thanks so much for replying. Is the difference between a mirror carp and koi different in that only Koi come from Japan? Have not been doing anything different with the pond but its been now 6 months since we did our water change. We did that last week now. The only thing I can think of is that we have been feeding them more high protein sinking food this past couple of months as we have two sturgeons as well. My koi carp will not eat their floating koi food and instead go for the sturgeon food. I want to do a nitrate test tomorrow but have lost the instructions from my bladgon pond master test kit..any chance anyone out there has the nitrate instructions? I have a white koi/carp who is as big as the black one and two ghosties and everyone else looks fine.
