Reputation Level: | I'm old fashioned, I favour open cell foam, it's as cheap as chips. In my system, as most of the course solids remain in the sump, you only have to give it a scrape every six months or so as the dirtier it gets, the better it works.
My maintenance is restricted to purging the sump twice a week in summer and once a week the rest of the year, if only to remove a few leaves that get under the net.

Before I can offer my opinion, can you say a bit more about your filter?
Cheers...Freddy.

I presume that the first chamber is a vortex? I used to have a Cloverleaf 4 bay, first bay was a Vortex, second bay was brushes, third bay was Flocor and last bay was Alfagrog. The Alfagrog had three layers of sponge laid over the top. As far as I can remember, these sponges were purely for taking out small particles and offered very little in the way of biological activity. So, I would suggest if it's more bilogical activity you want, then go for the Jap matting. In any event, imo sponges are a waste of time, as they don't really get rid of small particles, there will always be 'fines'. I don't know how the K1 is set up in your filter, but if you have a spare bay, you shouldn't go far wrong with Jap matting. Hope this helps.
Cheers...Freddy.

brushes - jap matting - alfagrog - k1 or fill the 1st 2 with brushes and leave the alfagrog out
what would you guys do
in case it helps i have 16 koi only small though, 1 at 10'' 6 at 8'' and the rest around 4'', ill be using a 12000l pump
also should i leave the air on constantly in the k1 or just when cleaning?
