Default dirty/brown water

hi guys

little advice needed here before i start building my own filter so i know how to combat this

cleaned my filter last night as i always do once a week as well as top 2 tiers on my shower, i changed 10 gallon of water as well at the same time (only had 10 gallon in my drums), i took 10 gallon of pond water out and noticed it was a dirty brown color. the water i took out was straight from the filter so it had just been through the foams and it was still brown, no big particles just brown, now since i put the tarpaulin over the canopy its cleared up to the point i can see right to the bottom without any problem, its that clear i can see the leaves at the bottom which need to be cleaned up

so as im about to build my own filter what do i need to turn this water clear?? i know the saying ' clear water doesn't mean good water' but i really want to see my koi to their full potential

hi mate im just up the road as youve said before and im no expert but i maintain clean water as in clear but ive found if you use filter wool as the first stage of filtration it does get the water really clear only thing is you have to change it every week its not expensive a couple of quid and i can get two refills out of that so a poundish a week but i dont use it all the time only in summer as my sponges take out most of the muck in my pond ...your in st helens is that right i am in widnes ....i have designed my own filter system and up to now its working very well ive maintaned good water quality since start up...you would be welcome to come and check it out if your intending doing your own filter build .

regards
kev
