Reputation Level: | making a new filter and sourcing parts hi, atm i have a pressurized filter system, i know its not going to do the job when my little koi start to get to a decent size so ive decided to make my own filter.
ive just picked up 24 brand new filter brush's for a decent price and now im looking for other bits
was thinking about a 4 section filter, 1st and 2nd section with the brush's, 3rd with some foam and in the last section have some media, i already have a fair bit of alfagrog but was hoping for some k1
so if anyone knows were i can pick up some foams or k1 at a good price feel free to share or if anyone has any k1 they want to offload give me a shout
i was also thinking about using one of the filter bags on the outlet to the pond just in case any crap does manage to get through.
what ya think |

Reputation Level: | Hi , Good move to get some filtration volume going. I think pressure filters are not for koi ponds on there own.
Two chambers of brushes are unusual , koi ponds are not generally that mucky. Perhaps some jap matting might be more beneficial as it can hold alot of friendly bacteria for a second chamber or flocor.
Are you running them under and over through the filter?
The best last chamber method I have seen is 3 grades of sponge on top of media. This needs a top to bottom flow though ( 4 chambers work the other way).
The sponges then keep the media clean and are easy to lift out and clean.Water coming up from the bottom through alfagrog tends to gum up from the bottom so its not easy to clean. No bag on the outlet should be necessary.
Have a look at the Oasis specialist filters last chamber. A t pipe for the outlet also acts as an overflow if the chambers block up. Very useful.
I take it the system will be pump fed. A few ideas for you anyway, i'm sure the end product will be a great improvment over the existing system. |

hiya pal thanks for the help, i was going to use 2 chambers of brush's just because i have 24 of em lol, i was thinking about the jap matting but its abit expensive, might have to bite the bullet an pay for it thou, i already have a alfagrog to use aswell and yes it will be pump fed. i was planning on useing 4 seperate box's side by side rather than chambers in 1 box but ill have to mock up a few designs and see what i can get my hands on |
