I'd go for the second one. It's the only type I've seen in a koi installation.

Hi mate....you have 2 different types of filter there. The first is a fluid bed filter which is filled with oolitic sand (3-5kg???) and has water pumped upwards through it to 'fluidize' the sand providing biological filtration. The 2nd is a sand filter that water is pumped down through to provide mechanical filtration or water 'polishing'. Which type were you after??

Regards Matt

Sand filters tend to need a big pump and there is a big danger that the sand can create a perfect environment for unwanted bacteria.

Yes you would need to run it 24/7

To Polish the water and remove fines then there are easier ways.

If that is what you are looking for?

I wouldn't be too worried about water clarity in a QT pond as a little colour will help keep the Koi calm.
