Default Water testing

Hi guys, it,s my first year testing my water, this might be a stupid question . It said in the booklet that came with the test kit not to bother testing the water through-out the winter months, but was just wandering whether or not, you guys still test your water through-out the winter months and should i still be testing my water throughout the winter, if i should still be testing through-out the winter, how often should i be testing?. I was thinking you would,nt because the koi are less active(and not feeding so less fish waste), am i right in this guys?

Hi Paul,

They say not to test through winter as most people have very cold ponds during winter and are not feeding so the toxins in the water should be very low.

The think with this is many don't clean there filters and change water and even in the winter if the filters need cleaning they need to be done and toping up with fresh water gives them a stable environment and to us would be fresh air.

Test kits are a tool for us to make sure that everything is OK in the pond/system and if that means you take 10 minutes on a cold day and all you find out is your water is fine then at least it gives you piece of mind

Default Hi Gazza

Thanks for that Gaz ,like you said - i remember last year i still had to clean my filters out now and then. I agree with your opinion Gaz on testing in the winter, if it only takes ten minutes on a cold day , it,s worth getting cold for, because then i know at least my fish are doing fine.

Agree with Gaz.

One thing to check is whether your particular test kits need longer to stand at lower temps before you take the reading.

Hi Dave, the test kit i am using at the moment is a blagon tablet test kit, have you got any ideas dave for how long i should leave a tablet test, to stand for before taking the reading(at lower temps) . I,ve only got 3 tests left with this test kit, so i am going to upgrade to a better one very soon. Thanks for the the help Dave

A consideration is that if a filter is turned off for any length of time, it's advisable to drain it and re-fill with water from your pool before starting it up again.

It is just because ponds are less used in winters.
