Ok....so we know that we should pre treat our k1 media with pp to remove any traces of contaminants on the surface and to 'etch' the surface in preparation for the bacteria to colonize. Question is I have 60 kg of beads to place in my bead filter at some point when i get finish my upgrade. I have 100litres of k1 that i will be doing with pp...should I not do the same for the beads????? They will (I assume) have been produced by injection moulding the same as the k1 and therefore subject to the same surface issues and possible release agents!!!! What do you guys think...pre treat or not???

Hiya
Well as you prob know i run a econo bead 60 bead filter and to be honest it took some while to mature. my pond has taken about 8 months to mature, well for the ammonia and nitrite to go down to safe levels. what i did do for mine was buy some bead filter gel start and put this into the bead filter all over the beads and leave for, i believe about 30mins and then turn on bead filter. i really did not see a difference at all doing this so its a hard one to say if it works or not. in the end what i did was just leave the pond to get on with it and stopped worrying myself all the time. i have 24/7 water running through the pond and must admit this did help alot with the ammonia and nitrite.
To be honest i went well agaist the right way of doing things as i had alot of fish in my pond from the start, davej is really the guy who can give you better advise on this matter.

I used pp on my k1 for nexus but didnt do anything with beads and they have matured pretty quick.
I suppose alot will depend also on what temperature your pond is running at plus i wouldnt clean the bead for a week or 2 once running to let some bacteria colonise on the beads.

That is a good point about the cleaning of the beads as i believe i could of been back washing the bead filter to much in the beginning.

possibly Mark....in the leaflet it says not to backwash for at least 2 weeks when starting up however my bead filter will be installed after a nexus that has filter wadding in place of the foam block in the last chamber...i am hoping that this 'extra' clean water will enable me to backwash much less often and give the bio a better chance of building up.
Yes I would PP the beads first, leave them in a standard dose of PP for a couple of days, in a small container you will only need a small amount of PP. After a couple of days, add a small amount of Hydrogen Peroxide so that and remaining pink in the water turns to brown or dissapears.
Seeding the beads with Ammonia and getting them throughthe Nitrite cycle will get you ahead of the game, so sound like a decent plan, few weeks and job done.

hi........................talking of PP we are adding some new barrells to our existing multibay for more bio... i have soaked them with virasure koi for 2 or 3 days when 1st purchased. Should i use PP to clean ? Also want to add alfragog and have left it in pond in onion bags for weeks now we are ready to use shall we clean in tub of pond water before adding to barrels?.
Thanks.....
