Have just worked out (for interest sake ) that if we ha ve a 16000lph pump going over the shower then this equates to approx 3500 gallons per hour that are being chucked over the shower and since our pond is approx 3300 gallons - then we are effectively turning the pond over every hour,,, but then i realised that we also have a 16000lph pump feeding the nexus 300 too - so really the pond is being filtered twice every hour either via bakki or nexus. Hopefully fish will enjoy and benefit from this!

interesting question shevvy! answer is - i aint sure!!

Obviously you cant "jet wash" water over some filtration systems (nexus / multibays) but surely so long as water spends adequate time in contact with relevant filter media, then you cant turn pond over too fast? There's no way our fish are "swimming againt a current" or being impared by a high(ish) turnover of water.

I wonder what other members ponds have an hourly turnover rate of?

Pondy - if you ready this, just remind me of the turnover rate of you pond?

Hi Guys,

Can you turn a pond over to fast IMO no but you can turn a filter over to fast and thats when you get the problems.

We have to remember that we need to allow for pipe restrictions and bends and head loss and you will be surprised how much flow you can lose with bends and stuff.

If you was to try to pull water through a nexus, bead, multi bay filter to fast there would not be enough dwell time for the good bacteria to do its thing so flow rates on filtration and media is very very important.

On the Bakki Shower this changes a bit as they just love a good flow with the minimum i believe is 3000gph on my pond which is 4500gls i run two 16000lt pumps over the shower but only a 10000lt pump on the vortex system, as the showers can handle the large flow but the vortex system needs a slower flow to get the best from the filters.

Good point gaz (as always )
had jumped from A-C and forgotten about B!! Of course there will be some loss as you mentioned - which i hadnt accounted for. The water return from the nexus doesnt seem to flow excessively fast but perhaps i can run an experiment one day when i find time and actually work out how much water the nexus returns in any one hour. Dont ask me why my curiosity would want me to know that - but it does lol!

Hi Guys,

Its a good little test to do as you will be surprised how some pumps will loss a lot of flow just because of a few bends or even smaller pipe and it can make a difference. We did a little experiment years back and changed a load of 1 1/2 pipe to 2" and in increase in flow was nearly 20% which is a good bit of extra flow but again we have to remember that its the type of filter plays a big part in hoe much flow you need through it.

You could get one of your big bowls and measure out and mark them so you could then push it under the Nexus outlet and calculate the flow.

I did this when i changes my QT/GOP about and the 12000 (apx 2600gls) how much do you think i got coming out the shower chute into the tank ?

Okies pumping to height and other restrictions will GUESS an approx 40% loss... so will go for 1600 gals a touch under 40% loss
