Dam bird has caught me off gaurd . I've been dealing with these herons for like 10 years!!. I was at home so I left the net frame off. It's done a quick attack on 2 of best kois!....why them??? and they were the only 2 kohakus I had.
It's been coming 3 times a day usually the crows, magpies, seagulls and parakeets sacre it off but it must be pretty hungry to risk it past them.
Well, it was here again this morning at first light but the nets back on full time so it can't get nothing. I've put my motion sprinkler back on aswell I took it off the side incase it froze.
Anyways, I'm now looking for 3 Kohaka's. Two to replace the ones that were lost and one to make me feel better.
My son thought this Nerf gun below would scare it.....lol and a pic of the ones gone.........
Grippers sounds good but this heron takes all the routes in it usually lands in the back of the garden and walks up...Could be a different heron thou.
My mate has the same prob then he found out there is a Heron sanctuary not far from his house has to keep his net on as found some fish dead on the side with puncture holes where the birds stab them
Thanks for the condolences....
I live near a few country lakes like Thorpe Park has heaps of herons thats about 5 miles in a straight flight.
I do like the look of them but my koi don't. The motion sprinkler and the net should keep it away but as Carl says they could stab them and kill them anyway. Cool vid thou.
Hi mate, been off for a few days, just seen that now,
f'ng thing !!!
you can get the plastic anti intruder spikes strips to put along your fence top including posts, which are now sold in lieu of barbed and razor wire,
they are very sharp.
I'm going to get some to stop next doors cat coming along the fence !
Also try putting a broader mesh net a metre away from the edge of the pond,
it must be raised up a few inches,
or better still the same with fishing line, a few inches off the ground ! to make it trip !
also with much looser fishing line to tangle it's legs up !
which won't detract from the looks of your pond as much as string net.
It may be worth putting mesh over the top, ive made a frame with fine black mesh and you can hardly notice it, its also easier to remove, always make sure to put it over when the pond is out of sight, just not worth it, or maybe a shot gun hooked up to some trip wire..
Guys you all need to remember one thing...... a heron needs to be in the water to catch the koi or near the edge if you have a shelf..... make your pond straight sided and deep... i live on a nature reserve, my ponds 6 foot deep all over... loads of herons here, none of them ever bother with my pond
