Guys you all need to remember one thing...... a heron needs to be in the water to catch the koi or near the edge if you have a shelf..... make your pond straight sided and deep... i live on a nature reserve, my ponds 6 foot deep all over... loads of herons here, none of them ever bother with my pond
Pondy, so would a 5th deep straight sided pond with a 3 ft raised above ground level be relatively safe from herons?
Thanks Al,

It may be worth putting mesh over the top, ive made a frame with fine black mesh and you can hardly notice it, its also easier to remove, always make sure to put it over when the pond is out of sight, just not worth it, or maybe a shot gun hooked up to some trip wire..
This is my gaurd
nice koi its jumping alot tho you should give it a scrap
Dam bird has caught me off gaurd . I've been dealing with these herons for like 10 years!!. I was at home so I left the net frame off. It's done a quick attack on 2 of best kois!....why them??? and they were the only 2 kohakus I had.
It's been coming 3 times a day usually the crows, magpies, seagulls and parakeets sacre it off but it must be pretty hungry to risk it past them.
Well, it was here again this morning at first light but the nets back on full time so it can't get nothing. I've put my motion sprinkler back on aswell I took it off the side incase it froze.
Anyways, I'm now looking for 3 Kohaka's. Two to replace the ones that were lost and one to make me feel better.
My son thought this Nerf gun below would scare it.....lol and a pic of the ones gone.........
Grippers sounds good but this heron takes all the routes in it usually lands in the back of the garden and walks up...Could be a different heron thou.
I am always on the lookout for them! A bloke down the road from me says he lost his fish to herons!
On another note, what's that plant you have in the pic to the left. Looks nice!
Wanting to get some more for my pond.
