Default your advice please.

hi all, this is my 2nd post, got some great advice on my 1st, so here we go again, i am going to upgrade my pond as soon as the weather gets better, it will me about 15ftx10ft by 1.8 deep, 1metre below ground, and built up with sleepers, i have 1 nexus easy, and a large 8.5ft myltibay with vortex2x55w EA uv,s plus an in wall skimmer, and 2x12000 lph pumps, and 1x15000, will be gravity fed, my question is, i have 2 bottom drain, 1x4" spindrifter, and an 4" normal, do i need 2 bottom drains ?, if so would it be best to run each to a separate filter, and just allow my skimmer to return to the pond, so ill have 2 drains 2 filters, dont really want to buy another filter for the skimmer, your advice would be much appreciated, thanks, kev.

Hi Kev,

Depending on your measurements (and i like the 10ftx15fy and then 1.8m ) if they are internal or external you pond will be around 5,000gls. Many run on one bottom drain but if you have two and two separate filtration systems then even better

Are you going to have a skimmer as you could always have one bottom drain and another filter on the skimmer which is also a good idea.

hi gazza, i have a skimmer, but as i only have two filters i am not sure if it would be ok to run the skimmer back to the pond without being filtered, as the skimmer has a 12ltr basket to collect leaves and stuff, i would like to put the two drains in if i can, but should i really get another filter for the skimmer, if so, would a small filter be ok as i dont have much room left. cheers gazza.

Hi Kev,

You don't have to have a filter on the skimmer its just if your running a pump and have the room its a good idea.

I supply a compact sieve from my skimmer separately switched so that can turn it off when feeding, I also find that I don`t have to run it many hours a day!

Default Keeping my water good

I also switch off my skimmer pump and shower pump in winter as it chills the water temp a bit and saves the leccy bill. I keep the other eco pumps running 24/7 from my B/Drain through a Large Vortex - Lacron 24" - Easypod - and a Cloverleaf CL2 to keep my test parameters perfect and gin clear water all winter. I`m feeding about 50% less food than than summer as I control temp to about 12 - 14 Degs (Forttex digital unit) via M/V from domestic C/H.
Roll on May when shall switch Clarity Shower back on until October.
