Reputation Level: | new build Hi all
I have just managed to get a large space to look at building a bigger pond as i have moved a sectional garage and need some help advice on filters and the build etc.
Looking at around 9ftx10(maybe 12) but need to see what depth you would go is 5ft enough??? would you go 6?
Also would you fibre glass it and if so does anyone have a idea of price?
Gunna bottom drain it and probably render it but am then open to suggestions money and time states i HAVE to get it right first time!
My current pond is around 800-1000 gallons so will be looking forward to the upgrade!
thanks
I am based in barnsley, south yorks so if anyone is local be good to pick yer brains and maybe have a nosey at your ponds?

I would go for 6ft remembering you will need to dig deeper than this for the concrete base etc. My pond is 6ft 6'' deep but the water depth is 6ft 2''. Make the pond as big as you can afford. The original plan of mine was to have 4ft deep pond until I started reading other pond building threads.
The best thing to do is to visit some ponds as many as possible and join your local club. If you post your location, you will no doubt get some offers to visit a few set ups.
Definately get the pond glassed, I did not render my walls but used Kingspan boards instead.
Good luck with you build. |

Reputation Level: | New build Hi
Go as deep and big as you can, allow for insulation (I used 100mm Celotex on walls and floor) Temperature Stability is easier to maintain in a bigger volume of water, your fish will be less stressed. Go for an Easy 210 filter, unless you want more work in cleaning something cheaper.
Forget the the render just insulate board straight onto your blocks
Fibreglass is far more durable, I had my Celotex covered for less than £500. expect to pay more if you can go bigger (which I now wish I had the space for). Quote:

Reputation Level: | Pond Construction Hi All
Anybody got experience of a pond builder in East Sussex?
I am moving to a House in Horam near Heathfield on 7th December that has no pond.
I'm looking for a pond of around 2-2,500 gallons.
My last pond was 1200 gallons so the filter etc is probably not enough.
The fish (14 koi ) are in a temporary 600 gallon pond (about 3 ft deep) at a mates house near Dartford Kent and I'd like to get them down to Sussex asap.
Cheers
Mike |

Reputation Level: | ok its started!!!
Had the base put in today but had some problems which should be sorted out. heres the dig piccys
The hole we dug hit a water holding area and quickly filled up within 2 hours to approx 3 ft water so made the base a nightmare to do but its got a 8 inch deep base and the bottom drain is going in after ( i know before you say it)
Basically the water just pushed it up to the surface and even by weighing it down it just moved up and we where not confident it would set straight so tommorrow we are cutting out the position for the bottom drain and pipe etc. even with a pump puping it out it still poured in.
Been advised this is the only option around it and will still be sound once its cemented back over and rendered, fibre glassed etc.
The area you see thats dug out is half of the pond as i wanted 2 different levels.
Should have some more piccys over the next few weeks and got a plan of filling it by middle to end of feb so cross yer fingers!
Cant post piccys of base..................its under water!!!l |

That's something I dread when the digger arrives in a couple of weeks; the hole filling up with water! However, I'm just hoping that it's been such a dry year here, that it won't happen.
I guess you've a high water table there?
Keep posting your pics as it develops
