my pond is 3 foot above ground and we get on with it ok. ok you cant sit on it but when you walk upto it you can put your arms on it and your very close to the fish. its really a matter of choice.

Hiya

I only brought up the wall height bit as you have reached the stage when it becomes more difficult to go back on things.

It does depend on the individual set up but for example if you intend to have seats on the decking and want to watch the fish in the pond from them, then the height of the walls is pretty critical.

Our wall is 3 feet above ground. We lean on it often. I appreciate koi are supposed to be viewed from above but its quite nice watching them from the side as well.

If you need any info on glass and frames, let me know.

Totally agree with you Alan.

A glass window is definately something I will be building in with the pond. Thanks for the PM with the useful info.

Not much done on the pond this weekend unfortunately, however next weekend should be more productive. I'm also sending the wife and daughter abroad for a 5 day trip to the homeland the weekend after that and I have booked those days off of work so should be able to get stuck in there.

I do have some questions if anyone can assist?:

There seems to be allot of controversy on how many times per hour you should be turning over your pond volume. I will estimate a 3000 gal pond so that’s about 13,600 ltr.
I will be going with a Nexus 300 which has a max flowrate of 13,000 ltr an hour, this will be pumped back to the pond via a mid water return. So, effectively I could turn my pond over probably once ever 1.5 hours (taking into consideration friction in pipework). However I will also be running a surface skimmer which will be pumped directly back to a mid-water return.
As my pond will not have any shallow sections and be more like a cube (with all corners rounded to 45 degrees). I don’t want to create such a large current in the water where the koi can not rest. Unless of course this isn’t an issue.
So considering I will need two pumps for the pond, what would you recommend or what do people use running a similar setup?.

My next concern is that I will have a separate tank which will be used for topping up the nexus. This will take a feed directly from the surface skimmer and a sump pump in this tank will then pump to a mid water return. The tank will also be trickle fed with fresh water via a purifier. The tank will have an overflow on it which will go straight to waste. I think this idea will keep the pond water level topped up and prevent the level from either overflowing or draining. Any ideas on this one?. Ways to make it better?.

Next question is the UV. What size should I be running ?. Some people say double the recommended, is this right?.

Many thanks in advance.

I used to turn mine over every 2.5 hours. Now Its turned over 1.3 times per hour and if I use my additional pump, twice per hour. The water is fresher and more alive if that makes sense. It definitely improves water quality with more turnover in my opinion.

Uv wise 55 w should be sfficient but more importantly is the amount of water you pump over it. I have a bypass to send less water over the uv

Hiya

The 300 will cope real well with a pond of that size and turning the water over every 1.5 to 2 hours will give great results. What the exact optimum will be in terms of the system, the stock and the feed rates may take a bit of playing with.

Are you doing anything with the water that is being pumped from the skimmer?? You are paying to move it so why not filter it....Shower or a veggie filter perhaps??

I guess I should really do something with it rather than just fill a tank and pump it straight back in. I think a veggie filter sounds good as I will probably have a waterfall. I just can't make up my mind. I think I need to do some serious surfing today to make my mind up (I'm off sick with a cold, shame I feel ill otherwise I'd be out there digging).

Hi,

I would personally not go with a veg filter as if not set up correctly and maintained they can be more trouble than they are worth. If you are having a skimmer line then its defiantly a good idea to put another filter on it as otherwise it is a waste just pumping the water round.

Thanks,
I assume most skimmers are the same or am I wrong in thinking this?. I would prefer to have a gravity fed skimmer where I can then pump from the tank it is feeding into.

Any recommendations on this and the UV ?

also any help with the air pump for bottom drain would be great. thanks
