Hi there Mark. Very interesting thread you have going. I have for some time now been considering putting in a Koi pond. We had one at our last house which had been up and running for around 4 or 5 years up to the point we moved. I mentioned to the wife that I wouldn't mind having a marine set-up (indoors), so off we went to a place (within a garden centre) that specialises in marine tanks and stuff. Anyway, I thought I'd take a peek at their Koi. I shouldn't have ! Now I have the bug again and am pretty sure I'm gonna take the plunge. My last set-up was a 2,000 gallon pump fed system. This time I'll go for a bottom drain hooked up to a Nexus (probably the Easy210). The thing is, liner or fibreglass, hmmm. Anyway, please keep the pics coming, they'll probably be of great help to me
Btw, how much did the concrete cost ?

Cheers...freddy.

hiya
right the pond is going to be around 13x9x4and will hold 2900 gallons in the pond. i ordered 2.6cu meters of cement already mixed from readymix 2go website. its was a c35 mix with added fibres as this makes the base stronger. the cost was £309.00 and they turned up 8am and was gone by 8.30am it went in so easy and took about 15mins to do. it is a 8" thick base. i did think about mixing it myself but doing it this way you know its all of the same mix.
one thing i would say is i have not gone the nexus way as had so many people tell me the sieve and bead filter was a better way to go but then its a matter of choice i think. please feel free to ask any questions you like as i will be putting on here the whole build till the end.
with you thinking liner or fibre glass i can tell you that to fibre glass this pond i got a price of £750 and to liner it is £250. i will not be going the glass way as i just cant afford that, but i may go box welded liner yet but not sure till the time im ready for it.
mark

Hi again Mark.

I've probably got this completely wrong, but I thought one had to put steel rods through the base which were then bent upwards at the edges(once the concrete set) and the hollow blocks fed over them. I'm pretty sure I've seen this done, or was it just a case of someone being OTT ?

Cheers...freddy.

hi ya Freddy
i have seen it done as you say but with bigger ponds but the way i have done it is way more then good enough, the base concrete mix had added fibers into the mix of which makes its even stronger then a normal mix and saves you having to do it the rod way. also with the blocks they are concrete blocks and not breaze blocks so you dont have to put rods through them at all. as you will notice the blocks are also laid flat down making then double the strengh even more.
