OK, the koi in question is a Shusui and would be benched in the Asagi / Shusui class at a show.

I know where Lau is going with this one so I'll answer

The KoSui is a cross kohaku / shusui, which, whilst having pattern elements more akin to a kohaku is still very much viewed as a Shusui, however, as already mentioned, if it was a KoSui it would be benched in Kawarimono but it WOULD NOT be judged as a Shusui.

It would be judged for all the various attributes we look for in any koi i.e deportment, skin quality etc

Someone also mentioned the white skin, this is something that many breeders have been trying to get on a shusui, I have a very white one here, but that doesn't automatically make it a kosui, simply a lower quality shusui (it should be blue) in the eyes of the judges.

The breeders may wish to have one 'style', the judges judge to a set of variety standards.

ZNA do recognise them and their standard is based on a Shusui pattern on a white skin
They are basically a white skinned Shusui, i.e. white where a Shusui is normally blue. They are judged by Shusui standards although they are benched as Kawarimono. So preferably you want the beni pattern to run along the length of the flanks in either a Hanna-Shusui or Hi-Shusui style, where a bald head is not a demerit.

Although being red & white it can be confused with Doitsu Kohaku the clue should be in the arrangement of the beni. A D-Kohaku shouldn't have a bald head and the pattern should be a piebald stepped pattern over and along the dorsal ridge.

I'll not argue with Bernie, he has far more understanding of this judging lark than I do, hence why he's fully qualified and I'm training lol

My point about them not being judged AS Shusui is more a clarification point, the koi in every essence of it's being is a Shusui, just it has white skin so should be benched in Kawarimono, although you'll see many that aren't at shows due to the number of 'whiter' skinned examples now being seen.

That's clearer for those reading, as the only difference between a Shusui and a Kosui is the skin tone, every other element that is looked at when judging Shusui would be relevant, so clean skin, clean head, even beni tone etc etc is what would be looked for.
