Red face Covering the pond

Hi
Tomorrow is liner day! We're getting the liner replaced and at the moment the Koi are in a pool next to their original pond, there is only about 2' between the both. The Koi are OK in the pool, there is a net over the top but we have avoided getting too close to them, they get stressed and skittish if they spot us, they are usually very friendly in their own pond.

There will be lots of activity near them tomorrow and I'm quite worried, they have hidey places but they are clearly worried when we get close. Do you think it would be a good idea to cover the pond? I'm sorry if this sounds daft but I wonder how this would affect the oxygen? We are sign makers so we have a large piece of 1mm rigid board that we could put 3/4's of the way over the top, would this do more harm than good?

It's such a worry what to do for the best!

In my opinion it'll be fine, they will appreciate it.
They're in unfamiliar circumstances and will feel vulnerable.

As a matter of course, mine can shelter away from the hot sun, either by sheltering in the shadow of the verticle sides at one end, or under overhanging shrubbery at the other.
Koi can suffer from sunburn, if they are exposed to too much strong sunlight if they spend a lot of time near the surface.

Default Covering the pond

Thank you! I'll take a piece home tonight, it'll only be for a couple of hours, but they've been in their old pond for nearly 20 years, the stress of moving was enough for them.

We did put a huge black tube in for them to hide and covered about a 1/5th of the pond with a sheet to give them some shade, but you are right, I think they would rather not see what's happening tomorrow. Even I'm glad I'll be at work!

Good luck with the new liner...fingers crossed. I feel sorry for your koi being stressed around so much, but i'm sure they'll come to appriciate all your hard work

He he! Thank you. Although I'm sure the major leak didn't bother them, regular fresh water and breakfast everyday - fishy heaven!

Default Covering the pond

Thank you for the good luck messages, so far so good. Update from Boycie is the liner is in and they are filling it, although that might take some time...

As for covering the pond, a large piece of corex over the top has worked a treat, I left a 12" gap all along one edge and they are a awful lot more relaxed, it's almost like they don't even know there are dramas in the garden!

We've been on such a steep learning curve, we bought a house that had a pond, but in actual fact we bought a pond that happened to have a house, the fish mean a lot to us so it's nice to have some reassurance from people who have been in these situations many times before.

Thank you very much
