Default Security Fence

We are all concerned about protecting our fish and there's been some good advice posted.
But something we should all consider is the possibility of intruders getting into our gardens, causing damage or injury, or ripping out expensive equipment and causing a catastrophe.
Many people have six-foot post and panel fences round their gardens, which are a good enough deterrent for most, (c'ept cats and foxes) but I consider the weakest point is the gap between the house and the garage that is common with most semi-detached houses.

I solved this by constructing an eight-foot high fence using 3" X 2” bearers, some trellis panels, some featherboard and a door bought from B & Q.

Dead easy to construct. The only tricky bit is the door frame, but this is easy if you build the frame round the door and then fit it to the fence.

It's impossible for anyone who might walk up our drive to see into our garden.

Looks great!

Just for consideration, the fence height limitation is set by individual councils and whether they choose to include the trellis into that equation varies accordingly. It might be worth people rining their local building control office up for clarification (/peace of mind).

Thanks for that and no offence meant, but....

In all my years of business experience I've always subscribed to the view, that in many circumstances, if you want to do something, just do it, rarely will anyone say you shouldn't have done it. But if you ask someone first, plenty will say you can't.

I've applied that thinking to my fence.
The neighbours won't complain, my neighbour whose property is facing the fence has copied mine, but it isn't so substantial and a bit lower, but well over six feet.
So I'll worry about it if ever some busy body council official comes round and has a go at me about it. But I think they've better things to do.

Anyway in these circumstances, as you've suggested, trellis doesn't count in most areas, it comes up occasionally on gardening messageboards.

Agreed I already had plans on doing a fence arrangement with the trellis allowing the overall fence height to reach 7ft.

Hight restrictions normally apply to boundary fences. As your fence is is on your side of the drive I doubt there would be a problem.

Neat and tidy job DHR!

Security is always an issue, sometimes an obvious fortress will give the impression there is something worth looking for behind?

On the basis that razor wire is rather frowned upon then pyracantha is an excellent substitute .

Here's an instant one.

A length of carpet gripper rod nailed to the top rail of the fence panels, unobtrusive, but painful.

(Keeps cats out too).

I found a little cement with broken glass pointing upwards tends to keep people out the garden, either that or as already said razor wire works wonders just be prepared for complaints
