hi
if you dont want to net the pond you can put lines of fishing wire up about 2 foot apart

Default netting

Hi there ,you could try putting screws in the side of the pond, if blockbuilt pond, that will keep the netting down really tight,we done this to prevent the herons, and they can,t get in now. .It does,nt look that good, but like you said it saves the fish.We had a problem with a heron ,but luckily he never managed to get anything, that was before we put netting up. Or you could try weighting down the netting with something. One day the heron was right outside the window ,and the pond is only around 5ft away from the window ,and we could watch the heron right up close, they are truly prehistoric looking, and scary .They look quite pretty though ,up close. don,t know if this is any help.
all the best
Paul

Herons are wading birds, they don't like getting their bum wet.
They will usually only step into water in which they can stand. But they've long knecks and can reach down a fair way. If you can prevent them standing on the edge of your pool then they shouldn't be much trouble

I put a pergola over my pond as herons won't go in a space that they can't fly straight up from, finished off with bamboo, seems to do the job, he sometimes sits on the summer house but thats it.
