Re: Heron Alert!!!!! I know I'm waaaaaay late in joining this discussion, but it springs to mind that there should be a 'pond building checklist'.
Herons don't like to get their behinds wet when fishing, so the perimeter edges of a pond should exceed the length of a herons legs in depth. This reduces their attack to pecking at the water and getting lucky. This can also be resolved by having the top of the pond water some inches below the edge of the pond as they have a maximum 'lean over'. In addition, you can have two layers of fishing line spaced around 4" apart, so jumping over trips them on the second layer.
I'm fortunate to live in an area that has few herons, but have taken the precaution to have a net that hooks to the inner edges of the deck overlay. It can be removed easily, just by hooking over the, well, hooks. It is the only heron aversion we have though. |
