Reputation Level: | Not wishing to appear "picky" and it may be just the angle of the photograph, but the tail did seem to be a bit on the large size, compared with the length of the fish.

Reputation Level: | I'm no expert, My recognition is from my rather ancient copy of; "Takeo Kuroki's Manual to Nishikigoi."
Of course all the different photos in the book are mostly Japanese champions in their class, but I based my comment on the fish on this picture of a chagoi, in the section on Kawarimono. Of course this is a doitsu, but its fins and tail are in proportion to its length.

Reputation Level: | i spent a little time at the koi dealer after work today who was more than happy to explain the diffrent things bout them, what each name meant and what to look out for so feel alot better in picking some of my own now, im not after any big fish id prefer to get some small ones and bring them on my self |

Reputation Level: | I think that's a very sensible idea. It costs enough to get your set-up right, without spending a fortune on large fish.
I got back into this earlier this year, I bought about a dozen koi of different varieties at 4-5" at ten quid each and they're all about 9-10" now. Of course buying small means that there can be dramatic changes in the markings as they grow. So I end up with one or two "kippers" it doesn't bother me, I'll never have the heartache again of losing an expensive fish. "It's a well known fact that if any fish is gonna get sick it'll be your best one."
For me, my pool is just another enjoyable feature of my garden, I refuse to get hung up about it.
