Hi Kevin,

How bad does it look and is there any Redness of the area and have you any idea how this happened ?

There are many ways to treat and what to use but here is what i do:

1. Have a 'mat' like a baby changing mate and lay a wet towel over it. If you don't have a matt something sift or some towels.

2. Make sure you have everything ready to hand alongside your mat. Take the tops off the bottles and lay cotton buds alongside the bottles without brushes. Tear off some sheets of kitchen roll, cotton wool, towels, gloves anything you think you may need.

3. What you need are: Betadine antiseptic liquid, usually sold in small bottles which have a brush in the top, and some Friars Balsam, again sold in a jar, some cotton buds and some Kitchen roll. All available from Boots, or Chemists and don't cost much. There are also koi outlets and people who sell treatments that can be used on koi some better than others and it just depends on what you like. I like to use 2% Mercurochrome and seal with lock and seal or propolis which is great on wounds.

4. Anesthetize the Koi. This can be done in a Koi bag or a bowl and make sure you have mixed the solution all in with the the water before adding the fish. I use 2-phenoxyethanol for this and once the Koi is in the bag/bowl just wait for the fish to start to go under and you will soon know as the fish will start to roll on its side. You will know when the fish is out by lifting the Koi out of the bag and let it lay over your hand. As long as it makes no response from the head or tail for 15-seconds, it is ready.

5. Place the Koi on the wet towel/mat and cover head and tail with the wet towels which i have found helps keep the fish calm and also if it does have any muscle spasams the fish stays on the mate better.

6. Place the fish so you can work on the wound and the fist stage is to clean this are and to make sure you get all the 'muck' with a bit of the kitchen towel or cotton wool and this is done by wiping the area and get as much of the area cleaned and once done the wound will normally look better.

7. When wiping around the wound you will probably find that any dead scales will come out, but if you have any other rough ones or messy then they must also be pulled out. This can be done by lifting the scale with some tweezers and gently pulling and if it is dead or decaying it will soon come out.I Like to also use a cleaner on the wound and would clean the area with Rocal or HP (Hydrogen Peroxide) being careful if you use HP as this will also damage any good skin or scales if you drip it on them so use sparingly with a cotton bud and work into the wound.

8. Use the Betadine or2% Mercurochrome on a cotton bud and get in under those scale pockets and get right in there and the pockets so under the scale as well. This can be done a few times and if the cotton bud get mucky then use another one as well.Make sure this dries of before moving on to the topical treatment and even blowing on the area can help speed up the process.

9. Get a cotton bud with lots of Fryers balsam or a sealer like Lock and Seal,Propolis on it and cover the whole area and make sure you work it all in well and once you have enough on there and its all well worked in again as above let it dry off.The idea of this to help give the wound a chance as this seals of the wound and gives it a chance to heal.

10. Put Koi back into a bowl of pond water with an air stone in it and watch it come round. The Fryers balsam with change colour in the water and seal the area. Release in to the pond
