Hi Nathan,

bit difficult to say from the picture, it looks like an uncler to me but as it looks like a doitsu koi, it may have lost a scale and the pockets become infected.

are the holes milky in colour,or red? if milky they could already have healed over. my concern would be the area around the wound as to making sure its clean and without infection.

you could go to a Koi dealer and ask his opinion, now if he's a good one, he will help, but if he is not as good he could just sting you and sell you aload of stuff you may not need, just for the sale.

Me personally i would join a club and get one of their health marshalls to come take a look and maybe advise a path to healing your koi.

There is an excellent section in Duncan Griffiths book "Advanced Koi diagnosis and treatment" on ulcer teratment and on the koi Mag forum Tommy2ponds has an illustrated section on ulcer treatment Healing on an ulcer : Koi Health all of which will help.

As I guess this is your first time joining a club and getting some expert guidance is invaluable but don't leave it to long, these ulcers tend to make fish very ill very quickly as they allow fluid out and bacteria in.

Definately use the Marine salt and not the Household stuff, if your going to use salt.

Not sure what Lee used daily but it was probably something like iosol i would guess.

However i know Tommy two ponds does come on here to read so maybe he will reply himself

Hi Nathan,

First off you will need to sedate the fish and work on it so a nice clean area with a baby changing mate or some wet towels all ready to go and a bowl to sedate the fish in. Make sure you have everything to hand ready before you start then you will not panic. Sedate the fish and place a wet towel over the eyes and tail which I find helps keep them calm.

You will need something to clean the wound like Rocal or HP (Hydrogen peroxide) if using HP make sure you do it with a cotton bud and only get it on the wound as it will damage other scales/skin. With this wound being like it is HP would be my choice as it needs a lot of cleaning out and you will see the HP fizz and once done dry off completely. You will need to remove any dead and decaying skin/scales making sure all that is left is clean wound and tidy and dry.

Once this has all been done too will need to no use a topical treatment which you will need to get from a dealer or on line dry good seller. There are many out there and I like to use Mecurochrome 2% and all you do is apply over the wound and then let it dry and if you can I like to do this a few times.

As you wound is fairly big and open I would also seal this off so I would then one the topical is dry add a sealer like lock and seal and also sprinkle Oraheasive powder on top of the seal while it is wet then blow off the residue powder and put another layer of lock and seal or a sealer over the top of the powder.

Although this will help with the wound this may well need to be done a few times to get on top of it and one this is we need to find out why and what did this in the first place and make sure you have control of it so a scrape will be needed on some fish. Then we can see if you have any parasites lurking around that will need to be treated.

The next thing for this to help heal is your water needs to be spot on and clean so making sure you clean the filters when required and carry out water changes is a must as the cleaner the water the more chance on the fish healing easier.

Heat is also a great help with these things so if you QT is nice and mature and you can heat it up this will also help and you could also if needed treat the QT with some CT (Chloramine T) which is a great tool at knocking back these types of bacteria in these situations.

Hope this helps a bit.
