Hi all
i have a hi utsuri that since the beginning of this year has had carp pox very bad. it seemed to come when i moved it from my growing on tank to main pond and still has it now. the fish has now been moved back for growing on more over the winter and the carp pox just does not seem to be going at all. the fish has been in temps of upto 30c in the last 2 months but now is at 20c with other fish. the fish is around 18 months and has grown really well i believe. at what age or how long will it take to go.

hi mark, i had this problem with a gosanke i bought off ebay, had the fish for nearly 2 years and the pox never seemed to get any worse, nor did it get any better, i read an article once about using silver nitrate, this can be bought from your local chemist in a pen form. its for bites and ulcers and such. i removed my fish and dabbed with the pen, it turns the pox a light white in colour, give it 30 secs to a minute and put it back in pond. i did this once a week for 3 weeks and it cleared up! im not a vet and dont have a degree in medicine so you may want to look further into this but all i can say is it worked for me.
Pox can be a pain and can come and go although most say it goes once the fish get older but i have a Chagoi which can have some pox come on it and its my oldest fish so i just think its one of those things.
There are many ways people deal with it and some do have some success but be careful with some of them as they can cause more harm than good if not used correctly.
i just dont know weather to treat the fish at all or just stick with it. its such a shame because i like the fish because its grown so quick since i have had it. i looks a right mess with how much carp pox it has on it yet none of my other fish has any at all.

well in that case i agree with gaz, just leave it be . it never seems to affect the health of the fish so.......... and ive just googled that pen i was on about say it shouldn't be used on fish but i swear it worked a treat on my gosanke.
If i could add my two penneth worth.
carp pox mmmm what a pain in the rectum... its a bane to us all at some point and even forcing me to almost withraw from a show one year as they got it overnight.(im sure the Essex boys would kindly laugh and tell you the stories).
there is a new treatment soom to come on the morket where you dap a "fluid" on the pox it turns the pox blue and after a couple of days wipes off. however it is new i know it has been tested with some good and bad results(but nothing drastic). but me..... i would just leave it alone, let it mature and see how it gets on.
Oh and Gazza i too have a 6 year old koi which has got it at the moment. but luckily i think the only one. Covers off today to have a good inspection.

Yes you have to be careful with silver nitrate and it can be used on fish but some are stronger than others and can do some real harm i have seen what my old mate Duncan has done with it and it was for a different problem but boy was it affective
