Default Dont go mad this weekend

Ok Guys we are in for a warm snap.

Real temptation to throw a load of food into the pond, but think filters rather than fish, If you spike the Ammonia by overfeeding and the temps then swing the otherside of "average" then you can go into autumn playing catch up.

Sorry for being boring

Dave

Good advice for all novices there Dave.

This could also lead to problems before winter sets in and if that happens then you will have an uphill struggle....

This is a very good point to raise, fish don't like sudden changes in their environment, a fall in temperature or an increase in ammonia will cause them to stop eating. An "Indian summer" followed by a sudden sustained drop in temperature, could leave undigested food in their gut.

I think we also need to mention that most koi keepers have unheated ponds too and without a Quarantine tank thats heated will have problems with any treatments that may need to be given as most of these require tempatures at a constant level to be affective..

Hiya Tricky

Not just aimed at newbies, we all get complacent given a warm afternoon and evening and a few beers and then notice that tub of food is empty.

Actually, this topic came up decades ago at koi meeting I attended. The most vulnerable time suggested could be on a warm Christmas Day when people imbued with the "Christmas Spirit" get a bit carried away and chuck in some food.

Hi Guys,

That sounds like me at Christmas as they still get food then so i will make sure i don't give them any extra

The one thing we always need in our systems is stability and thats the key so as Dave has said above tack it easy we all no its hard not to get carried away feeding our fish but we have to do it correctly and not in patches.

Enjoy the summer everyone

Default Koi winter feeding

Hi Dave
It's our first winter, I am not looking forward to the dormant period and hoping all the Koi all make it after the up's and downs they've had this year so I read your topic with interest.

The previous owner of our fish told us to stop feeding them 2nd week of october and as of last week I started reducing the pellets, they're on about half their usual amount and are still eating them greedily. Is this the correct way to prepare or should I have stopped feeding them already? They are in a unheated pond.
Many thanks.
