Default Help please

Hi, I just noticed my favourite koi has a mark juts before it's tail. I have attached a picture taken from my iPhone, could someone please help diagnose and tell me how to treat. It seems like some kind of a green scab. Many thanks in advance, James

Hi James

no picture

when you say it has a 'mark' , what does it look like? have you bowled & handled the fish for a closer look? it cold be some form of mechanical damage where the koi has knocked itself. This could be a result of some irritation and the koi has been 'flashing'.

test you water parameters . do you have a good quality test kit ?
take scrapes from your koi and check for parasites. do you have a 'scope ?

pm sent.

Russell.

Can't see from the photo, is it raised above the surface, like a blister?

Like this.

If it is, it could be carp pox. Unsightly but not fatal.

If it isn't, it could as has been suggested, be a wound

Sorry about the poor quality of photo.

It's not raised, it's more of an indentation. I hope it's just a wound. Is there anything I should treat this with or just monitor it over the next few weeks?

If the skin is broken, scales missing etc then , ideally, you need to 'topically' treat the area and seal it.
I am assuming you don't have the experience (or the equipment?) to do this?
otherwise i would expect you to have done it already.
This is why i have sent you the PM with the advice given, as you will need to learn those skills, and become aware of which 'medicines' and equipment you will need to have in stock so that you can tackle this type of wound, and others.

If you have children then you will know what you have in your medicines cupboard and how to use it all, combining this with all manner of diagnosing issues whenever your kids show the slightest sign of sickness or injury.

Koi Keeping is no different.
