Hi, just thought I'd run this past you experts, as being a koi keeper for 9 years I still find things that stump me, I have a small fish that is not well and seems to labour for breath, purchased at the cambidge show was doing fine then disappeared only to suface 3 days later on his side struggling for air. I netted him and gave good dip in pp then quarantined now 2 days in oxygen doing better but L /hand gill is not as functioning as well as r / hand. all water params ok and other fish seem ok, not overstocked & usually no probs, also nothing found on microscope scape ( although I've only had that since June this year ).
thanks in advance,
Nigel

If you've not already done this, I'd suggest try checking the gills for infection.
Carefully open the suspect gill plate and check what you see, the membranes should be bright pink, compare it with the other.

hi, had a look in on gill plates and they both look healthy and the fish is more active with both gills operating in tandem, . another day in quaratine with plenty of air should see him straight.
Davej all of us enthusiastic ameteurs together will be a force to be reckond with.
I consider myself a newbie just putting bits of the koi puzzle together, learning all the time.
A, no scrape prior Dipping as had to go out at 8am when i found him limp on his side.
A, a dip of strong pp soloution for an hour, rinsed in clean water then quarantined with plenty of air

Reason: to answer davej Questions
To do a dip in strong solution PP for an hour is something i would not reccomend, you risk doing serious damage to the koi's gills
I am pleased your fish appears to be recovering.
I came home tonite and found him floating, he never made it, .
got scraping and swobbing but found nothing to give the game away, visually he looked ok. At the weekend I'll checkout 1 or 2 of the others with a scrape, they seem happy enough from where I'm looking.
I need to educate myself more in fish health,
They say a man who never made a mistake never made anything.
Sorry to hear the sad news. Most of us have been through this situation, some of us more often than we'd care to admit.
I mentioned elsewhere, with every fish I've ever had, I always look for some demerit, regardless of how small.
I find it's a small consolation if ever any of 'em go "fins up."
