Hi Chris,

I would suggest you carry out some water tests to make sure all is OK and also a scrape and have a look to see if you have any little critters about. Its hard to see from the picture if the marks are pinking up or secondary infection.

For those of us who don't know, what is pinking up? We see signs of stress occasionally when veins show, we say they are looking a bit pink. Is it the same as pinking up?

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Hi Alan,

When a fish gets stressed or has a parasite or water quality issue they can pink up.

This is when the white on the skin/scales starts to go a pinky colour or has the veins start to show and this is normally an indication that something is going on and needs to be looked at. The first port of call for me would be to make sure my water readings are spot on and everything is nice and clean. If the water is spot on I would then be looking at doing a scrape on the fish to look for any parasites.

Thanks Gazza, that's what I thought although when we see it, its not individual scales that go pink as in the photo hence the confusion on my part.

Hi Chris,

Interesting and having just looked at the picture do you have any other pictures of this fish and any details like breeder and have you grown it on from Tosai ?

Although it’s hard to see in the picture could it be beni coming through as there looks like some up near the head?

it could be gazza but that doesnt answer the reason for this koi jumping and gulping for air? can you tell me if this koi blows bubbles though its gills after gulping for air? and also do you have air going into the pond ie from air pump or water fall.
