it could be gazza but that doesnt answer the reason for this koi jumping and gulping for air? can you tell me if this koi blows bubbles though its gills after gulping for air? and also do you have air going into the pond ie from air pump or water fall.
Sorry to butt in again but two of my koi gulp air and blow bubbles through the gills, is this a sign of flukes?
Many fish will come to the surface and take in a nice gulp of clean air and then blow it through their gills on the way down through the water and this is called "lurking" and is nothing to worry about I had a Showa that used to do it all the time and she passed the skill on to a Chagoi
If the fish is jumping as in coming right out of the water and flashing around I would suggest there is something going on and would make sure on the test kit and test all the water and if spot on and it carries on then more scrapes.
You say your water is spot on what are the readings?
Hi Gazza, we did a scrape back in April and found 2 gill flukes from 3 scrapes. We treated with Fluke M to be on the safe side. We get the odd one flicking but only occasionally.
I think it may well be an idea to keep an eye on the fish and if it is starting to look like it is jumping or behaving erratic then another scrape may be in order as it’s easy to miss the little critters on a slide I know I have before.
Hi Alan,
Normally one or two flukes would not be a problem as long as the fish is healthy and all the water conditions are good as our fish live with parasites all the time most ponds will have some parasites it’s just mother nature. To be honest I would never treat unless the fish where showing symptoms as I am a big believer that we can treat our ponds too much and then some of the fish can get sort of “used” to these chemicals and this can then make them harder o get rid of in the future.
