I think it would be very difficult to get the right dosage/time.

Normal dosage for pools of propriatory brands is;

Formalin 10 mls to 150 gall.
Malachite 10mls to 175 gall.

I always repeat after seven days.

Did mine a couple of weeks ago.

With a search I found;
"For short dips up to 16 ml. of malachite can be added to a litre and the fish left there, for ten to thirty seconds."

This seems very vague and a recipe for a potential disaster.

The advice for formalin seemed even more vague.

I'm a firm believer of dosing the whole pool, less likely to over-dose.

Digressing..

I can remember before all this 'elf 'n' safety nonsense you could by both chemicals at a chemist at a fraction of the cost now in aquatic suppliers.
Still, I can also remember that when I was at school we could buy all the ingredients to make gunpowder in Boots and we did.

Hi Shevy,

First off i would ask why would you want to do a MG & F dip and what you would gain from it ?

MG & F should normally be used as a pond wide treatment as if its on a fish in the pond then your more than likely to have the little critters in the pond on other fish as well.

Depending on what you are treating for MG & F will be dosed at differing days as it depends on the temperature for say the likes of White Spot.

I haven't used it as a dip, what do you want to achieve?

On dose rates - take care with any suggestions that you increase the malachite element from the standard.

Well Gazza I am in the middle of doing the whole pond for White spot but have two koi in the Qt Tank and don't want to do the whole tank as I have 20small koi in there and my show and grow eating like mad so might just put them back in the pond and hope it all gets sorted but read someware you can make a dip and leave them over night with air.

If you have whitespot in the QT you will have to treat the whole tank as whitespot has a free swimming stage and is lethal !

My thoughts;

If the fish in the QT tank are clean then I would wait until you are confident that the pond is clear of Ich before moving them.

Dipping the fish that are going in will not protect them from what parasites there are in the main pond - indeed removing mucus and stressing them will only make them more likely to be targets for any critters in the main pond.

I think your right Dave they all look good in the tank and eating like mad but think I will wait untill the pond is done. No sulking of flashing in the tank but pond is looking good today but tempted to fed as I have never seen them like this before they are even trying to eat my fingers. I panicked at the weekend when I did a Amm test it was 2.58 I did'nt know what to do so I rang NTlabs who said not to test as the colour will give a false reading thank god for that.
