hiya all
one of my new fish has just got abit of a white patch on its head. all i can say is it has come from a heated pond and is now in a unheated pond. it looks like carppox but im not 100% sure. if it is has it come up because its in a pond at 12dec now and if so am i right in thinking it will go next spring when it warms up again, cheers mark

Hi Mark. Does it look raised ? Several of my old fish had this condition, usually around the tail area though, and raised, or lumps. Mine seemed to get it in early spring, and it would take a couple of months to go away, only to return again the next spring. As the years went by though, most of the fish showed no signs at all, just one of those things I guess. Could it be losing it's pigment ? Hopefully someone can advise you better.

i dont think carp pox is any thing to worry about, well thats what i have always known any way.
get yourselves a cheap microscope from ebay , lidle, argos , they are one of the most important bits of kit you could have .
doing a scrape is easy , i'l see if i can find a link or better still a video link , so you can all see how to do it
the reason i say important , is you should never treat a fish on assumption , theres two reasons for this , one you could be treating the wrong thing , and put undue pressure on the fish and pond system .
the second , if you treat , but dont do it correctly , any parasites that are left , are survivors , and have a bit of imunity against treatment , and its with these , you could be looking at long term problems .
mark , when i looked at your pic , i didnt think carp pox , i thought tric or costia , i had a fish at the start of this year , that had a very simlar milky patch on the shoulder , it turned out to be both !!
just let me clarify , its very hard to diagnose a fish from a pic , and it could be carp pox , so better to be safe than sorry , and do a scrape , as if its carp pox , its just a case of waiting for it to go next spring , but if its tric or costia , you'l have time to do a few treatments before the temps get to low to do a treatment
hiya steve
can you give me some idea on what to do, do i net the fish, bowl it and then what scrape side of fish or do i scrape the patch where it is. i will need to buy a microscope. can you give me a clue what kind of one to buy please.
