Reputation Level: | koi help! Hi
I need some urgent help. Last Tuesday i lost my Showa and my chagoi and stellius were not acting right, all my fish were flashing at the bottom of the pond. I went to my local koi dealer and was advised to put malachite and formaldehyde in to solve the issues. My chagoi died on Friday and my stellius is no better. The remainder of the fish are ok and not flashing as much as they used to, but my nitrite has gone from <0.3 and is now verging on 0.8 and my PH is 7.5. Can i drain some the water out and top up with fresh and put de clorinator in?
I am realy worried of loosing the sturgeon i have put a bigger pump on so that i increase the amount of diluted oxygeon and have an air pump running 24 7 but no change i have noticed its gills are not moving as much as they used to. Can anyone help i feel that i have been issued the wrong medication and could be somthing different.
Your help will be greatly appreciated
Paul
Can anyone please help |

Reputation Level: | Hi Paul, sorry to hear about your losses. Without knowing more about your set-up,(how long your pond has been up and running, equipment, capacity etc) it's difficult to pin down what the problem might be. I'm certainly no expert, however, I'd say the first thing you need to do is do a partial water change, probably as much as 50%, and only feed in minimal amounts if at all. This should allow you time to find out what's causing the problem. If your pond is fairly new, then I suspect you have 'New Pond Syndrome'. It's a VERY common problem that most Koi keepers will have experienced. Nitrite can be very stubborn to drop, you just have to keep carrying out partial water changes, and feed very little. Hope this helps.
Cheers...freddy. |

Reputation Level: | i agree with bcfc , not treatment should have been done until a scrape was done , and your full water perams checked !! typical bloody dealers , jump in without doing the research , and just coin in on your loss !!
anywho , stop feeding , do a few water changes , and get your water test results up , and we'l try and help you

Reputation Level: | koi help Hi people thank you for your replys. I have done the 50% water change.
Details of my pond
2000 gal's
Blaggon multi filter box with UV and carbon filter
4ft bio unit full of alpha grog
Air stones
splash return from bio unit aprox half meter above water
Pond has been up for nearly 2 years as of October and never lost a fish till now.
My readings from the tetra test kits are as follows
7.5 PH
0.3 Nitrite
8 oxygen
P+F were advised to put in due to the the fish flashing at the bottom, i had a friend at a very reliable dealer who did a scraping on Friday of my chagoi that had litraly died and found no trace of parasites, issues with gills, could not say why it died. My stergeon that has now just taken a turn for the worse i have been able to remove and inspect. As its gills are very visable the top part is dark from where as the lower is pinky red and now not able to stay afloat, so getting myself ready for when it dies which will be very soon. I am at a total loss and my friend who owns world of fishes is at a loss as well. He was not the koi dealer in question who advised the P+F. The remainder of the fish are normal apart from my 24inch chocolate gin rin who is aggressivly trying to exit the pond.
If anyone else has any idea to what is happening i will appreciate any feed back, or even if there is a koi vet in the area that willcome visit me? |

Reputation Level: | ammonia ? have u tested? looks like u have learned a hard lesson. treating blind. flashing could be just a water problem. ammonia or nitrite. parasites will leave the koi when dead, so u will not find any. i would scrap a couple and see if u find anythink? get ur water right. if ur koi seem ok u can ride a bit of nitrite untill ur filter sorts it. hope this helps |

Thanks for this, i will get the ammonia test sorted and keep you posted. I have just tried to upload a photo of the sturgeon with the differnt coloured gills but my image is too large. Would this water condition cause the gills on just 1 fish to go this way? It is very dark brown at the top of the gill but very pink at the bottom?
I understand that all the bateria has been killed im my filters from the p+f, how long does it take to come back, will i need to get the bacta start kit to give the bio units helping start?
Cheers Paul |

Reputation Level: | so u have not tested ammonia? sturgeon need loads of air, that might help. i wouldt get any filter start, i dont use it. more air in ur pond for the sturgeon or take it out if u have somewere else to put it. just get ur water right now. i have just changed to k1, so my filter is nocked back at this time. so i am just testing water every day. nps again. it will kick back in soon. |

hi there sorry to hear about your problems, a scrape should be donne asap you need to know what your treating, you shaould have taken your sturgeon out when using m/f, this maybe why he is sick, try a salt bath for him at 3% for 10 mins this may help him. as for the koi you must realy do a scrape first,
check this site on doing scrapes. Koiquest- parasites page
heres a link for salt measures guide Salt Treatment Concentrations
hope this helps |
