Default The fish

This is fish number 4, another I am desperately worried about, not as big as fish 3 but still a striking fish that i dont want to lose!

She has suddenly developed a lot of red spots and her mouth has swollen up all in the last two weeks.

Both fish 3 and 4 were only ontroduced to the pond 3 weeks ago but were in pristene health! i know stress can play a factor?

This poor little bugger has gone down hill really rapidly, I have taken a real close look this last few days and feel horrified that i didnt spot this sooner! but look at the poor sod, i dont want the others looking like this! id feel more comfortable killing them off and stocking trout!!!!

Default Further Info

Hi Steve

I hope i have given you plenty of info, to give some further clarification on earlier questions.

I will do a PH this evening and tomorrow morning and let you know!

The pond is maintained and the filter semi cleaned every few weeks, but thoroughly cleaned every 6 months.

There are 13 fish in the pond, 3 quarantined off, they feed regularly, between 2 and 2 times a day on high proteing food, more recently some silk work, but food is never left un eaten, or to stand.

Problems have been for about a year, we introduced new fish 3 weeks ago and quarantined the 3 poorly ones, but 2 of the new fish, as per the posts above are now ill, and one of the old ones that was previously ok!

ALARM BELLS ARE NOW RINGING!!! as you clearly know, these babies aint cheap! and my dad has had the big black and white with an orange spot on her head from the first post "aka MOTHER" for 18 years!

Oh and the filter box is about 40 gallons, is that too small?

Hi Rich ,

your filter is too small , so you need an upgrade , if your neighbors dont mind the noise of the waterfall , the fastest way to improve filtration is a bakki shower

right onto the problems at hand , it does look like a bacterial problem , and quite a bad one , my guess is its a secondary infection , caused by either poor water peram's in the past , or an introduction of parasites from new koi or an existing parasite problem , made worse from either the bad winter or they just got to the point, of over load . so if you can buy or borrow a microscope to do a scrape , we could at-least rule out one or the other .

first things first , stop all feeding !! koi can go quite awhile without food , so dont worry !! , do a water change 25% over the next 2-3 days , if your not using a hmo water filter for your changes , use a de chlor product .

now here comes the crux , some of them are quite bad , and it's totaly upto you , but i would go in hard , as the wounds/infection look nasty !!

there are quite a few products on the market , i buy all mine from here , also heres a health link Koi carp health products and Koi carp medications from Koi Water Garden Ltd.p , as i find his service very quick , and he is realy helpful , i would go proflavine hemisulphate first , and, mabe salt with the second dose , though this will depend on how those wounds are looking , dont forget turn uvc's off ,.

or you could go acriflavine and use this long-term , as it could be awhile in getting them back to health .

just ignore the urge to feed them !!

usually , i would say find the cause first , as in scrapes , to see if theres parasites , but for me in this case , treatment first , we'l find the cause as we go .

Hi Rich,
The fish above does look spawnbound to me m8.
This can sometimes cure itself by the fish re-absorbing the eggs or sorry to say it can be fatal.
Not sure if you can do much but have you tried your local vets? They will come out to you and work there if you need them too.
Other fish look like bad cas of fin rot and ulcers. Treatments can be bought from most good koi dealers or aquatic shops

i think a bit more air might help too. also phone around your local dealers see if any one can do antibiotic injections they would help a lot in some of your fish
