Default Karp ill or pregnant?

All

I've just moved house and inherited a very nice pond with 2 Koi Karp the size of cats and some gold fish.

I'm learning fast but I' worried about one of the Koi Karp. She/he's been swollen for a while now (over 3 months) and I'm worried that its sick but hoping that shes pregnant!! Swelling is the same on both sides and the scales seem flat. The sclaes are greyish compared to the rest which is white.

What do you think?

The other Koi Karp seems fine and often swims just behind the white Koi. The white Koi will sometimes go on her side when swimming and doesn't seem to eat much (I can hand feed the black one).

Many thanks
Paul

Hi paul

koi dont get pregnant , as they reproduced via spawning .

what your seeing , and looking at the pic , that fish does look like she's carrying alot of spawn (eggs ) do you have any males in your pond ??

if you do have some males in there , try and borrow or buy a cheap paddling pool ,and put her and a male in there , and try and get them to spawn , if you cant , and don't have any Male's , cut back on feeding , so she reabsorbs her eggs .

if you not seeing any signs of stress , then i wouldnt be to worried , and mabe buy yourself a male for next year

Hi Steve

Many thanks for the speedy reply.

I'll cut back on the feeding as I'm not getting in there :-)

They've been fed every day along with the gold fish so we'll cut back and see what happens.

Out of interest how long will she stay like this for?

Cheers
Paul

Hi paul,

she'l stay like this for a long time unless she is spawned with a male , theres is another way , which alot of show people , and the japanese use , which is to starve the females for 3-4 months at high temps (22c+) to stop them producing eggs or to re absorbe them ,(though this is mostly to keep body shape , and prolong growth ), this is a bit hard to do in a mixed pond , as they would all have starve along side her .

the best bet , would be to treat your self to another koi and grab a male .
