Reputation Level: | 2 sick Koi Adivce please Hi all,
I have 2 unwell Koi, one with swimbladder problems, I can not acertain if this is an infection or a mating injury. And a second with what visally appears to be mouth rot, which has now formed a seperate patch on the crown of the head. He also appears to have thinning of teh tail fin.I will now give as much information as I can to the set up and situation.
I have recently taken stock of a Koi system from a house move, approximately 10 koi averaging 14''. 2 simmilary patterned and difficult to diferentiate. A few days after the move into a tempary holding tank (4/1.8/0.9m) from what i have gathred rather unsurprisingly the stock showed signs of breeding, with some fairly relentless chasing of a female. Now I have 2 equally sized matching coloration so I can not be 100% sure that the injured Koi is infact teh same one as the one being chased.
concurrently we were finishing our more permenant pond, the eve of the move I noticed that the fish I suspect was being chased was swimming as tho contracted swim bladder disorder/injury.
The second koi with this mouth rot like injury innitaly appeard to have lost both eyes, upon inspection they were simply shut, altho I am 99% sure he has lost sight as he will swim rapidly into teh sides of the tank in bursts of energy. The skin was litterally hanging off of his lower mouth sides/cheeks and over the past day a white spot has formed on the crown of his head. There is a possibility that this fish was injured when the stone fountain island collapsed, but again I can not be sure as the injury showed no signs of bleeding when I netted him for the move.
the rest of teh Koi are in their new home and seem very content, again showing signs of mating with the other matching patternd Koi; it is for this reason I am unsure if the swim bladder is through injury or is an infection.
segregation was saturday.
Treatments: sunday, primarily for the mouth problem I have treated with Malachite green (as a dip and as a pond treatment) and formaline, and a bactericide containign acriflavine (0.1%). I introduced an additional pump to provide better airation also.
I have also done a good water change and my levels are as follows:
ph-8.4
Ammonia-0.25ppm
Nitrite-0.25ppm
Nitrate 30ppm
This afternoon my tempary tank has poped a leak! and I now have the fish seperated into individual 300litre containment tanks, with the treated water. whats my best course of action? I am constructing a larger holdign pen currently
Any advice on what the illnesses may be and routes for curing these infections are hugely appreciated, I would hate too see these guys go. If needed I can upload a photo of the injured koi.
Sorry for the lengthy post, I have tried to give as much information as possible. |

Reputation Level: | Righ hi first of all and sorry to hear of the problems but the fish will not cope will on there own being sholwing fish they will get very strees being on there own wich wont help matters get your self a metal frame swimming pool till your pond is finish. you have not told us any thing about the filtration you are running? you need to get all your water reading down to 0 ASAP coz if your fish have been spawning that will throw the water quality so do parshal dayly water changes till you get all reading to 0 as soon as you get a new container for the fish to stay in i sugest you salt the pond as this will help th relive strees and also help fight any infection. and if you can get some pic's up to see that would help but at the mo strees is the thing to stop get them back together and salt your pond your local pond/koi dealer will suply it hope this is of some help

Reputation Level: | Hi, thanks for the reply. Yes i will upload a photo asap. I had quanentined the two fish into their own holding tank, together - as to eliminate any bullying from the other healthy Koi.
I have read on various other sites that dosing salt along with Formalin is a no go?
The filter system that came with the set up consisted of a fishmate 15000UV and a kokneykoi 4 chamber + vortex filter, 2 aquamax pumps 6000 & 5500 and a fountain. I am aware that general opinion will be that this is most likely inadequate filtration for my stock level, but this is what they came with! I will soon be addign an additional japmat tank chamber to the main pond until money allows to upgrade the whole set up.
SO at the moment the quarentined pair are running off the fishmate 15000UV with the remaining stock witht eh kokneykoi filter chamber. WHich currently seems to have no problems coping, I have reduced feedign since the previous owner showed signs of over feeding them.
Yes, I am carrying out 1/4 changes each day to rectify the levels.
pictures to follow

Yes you are right there about that but at the mo i wouldant add any more chemicale keep up the water changes and stop feeding till the water quality is right then start feedding small amounts but with the water changes there will soon be no formalin left in the water so then add salt it will help has its a natural healer it will keep the nitrite at bay and also keep the fish from getting streeted to much
