| *sniffs* yeah been thinking the same. hes swimmign head down or pleating aroudn straight into things, hes definately blind from what i can figure and i think he keeps trying to rub it off by his behaviours. the female is showign what i can only assume to be the early stages of it too on her mouth, so i have applied MG to both of them on it. am going to salt the pond tomorrow.
even if i could rid it from antibiotic injections, figuring he is blind anyway, is the vote to be crule to be kind and to put him out of his misery?
I cant begin to express hwo saddenign it is to see him liek it and to think perhaps i could have done more had i noticed it sooner.
Any idea what it actually is? Mouth rot? jsut a general bacterial infection?

| Hi bert, I just read your posts, I am very sorry to read about your problems, but I know how you feel. We experienced this problem in our pond last year. We took all our fish out into a holding pond while we were making the main pond bigger. Because the holding pond was shallower it encouraged them to spawn. Several damaged themselves and one got damaged the injury turned into an ulcer. Eventually we got the main pond running and returned the koi back into it. But the ulcers did not go away they just got worse. We treated with machalite and formalin plus various other stuff but it did not help. In the end our koi dealer gave us a number of a vet , the late Louise Andrews, and she gave us a visit. She took out one of our koi with a mouth ulcer, put it to sleep and did a altopsy. She confirmed that it was aeronomas (bad bacteria) etc and we needed baytril (anti biotics) and told us to change atleast 20 percent of the water every day! (this would keepthe bad bacterial down) She told us to seal all the wounds on the koi. For extra support and advice we join Essex Koi club, they were very helpful and supportive. The fish had two courses of antibiotics and eventually we got rid of the ulcers. I've got a pic of the one which was put to sleep. The others have healed up ok. But looking back it was a combination of several factors:
They spawned in the holding thank which made the water quality poor, amonia should be zero, nitrite zero if not the fish get stressed and their emmune system fails and thats when the nasty bugs get in.
If a fish has lost a scale treat asap by cleaning the wound and sealing it this stops any bugs getting in (any koi dealer will have this). If it looks infected get the fish out and quarantine it, it will be cheaper to treat it and will stop the infection spreading to other fish in the pond.
Hope things get better soon |

| Right you have a VERY bad bacterial infection and you have 2 routes to go down the easy is to put it out of its pain and put it to sleep the other will be a bit costly and there is no garanty it will servive but it weather you are up for it? first it need a shot of baytrill and get your self the kusuri ulcer kit about £40 and it contains the wound cleaner, antibacterial powder, antibacterial liquid and a sealer this need aplyeing every time it has washed off and the pond need salt. |

| Thank you all for your replys, information and help.
Unfortunately I had to put the guy out of his misery saturday morning. After treating him locally with MG and hoping for the best, I came out saturday morning to find him dormant at the bottom of the pond. Took him out, and altho still breathing, there was no one 'home' he had gone stiff and non responsive.
I had reached the conclusion that it was a bacterial and qite simply MG wasnt powerful enough to combat it at that late stage. From all I can figure it had manifested inself into his head and that was that. Put him to sleep and can move on from this with a good ammount of learning.
The swim bladder fish seems to be reasonably content, and has even managed to swim in circles going the opposte way!ha. I am holding a bit more hope for her if the salt treatment has any affect.
My main pond if being taken to 6' this week, so its going to be busy and excitng.
Thanks again for all your help. |

Mini update, the remaining ill fish I have now discovered has a rather large area of scales missing on her side (ulceration?), I had not noticed this until now as she has been swimming with that side hidden for quite some time. The area looks clean, I have topically treated the area with bacteriacide, which is acriflavine and MG leaving it to soak into the are for a few minutes with her half in the water, injured side out, so I could treat.
I have also salted the water as advised, 5kg to my 3000litres. Whilst i had her netted I have fed her a few peas, she seems to hae no appitite tho, but is very acvite constantly swimming about, despite it being off kilter.
Just ran a water test and am showig clean results accross the board. All other fish appear clean and healthy, eating well and gently cruising around. |

| Keep an eye on that area it would be a good idea to get your self the kusuri ulcer treatment kit wich will contain every thing you need to treat but also includes a sealer to stop anything from getting to the wound while in the water and fingers crossed for you that this one makes it |
