Default help required please

basicaly about a month ago i built a new pond, i used to only keep goldfish in the old on, but i decided to get some koi in there as well.

the pond is well within the sufficient size L 3.5m x W 2.5m x D 1.5m so it is plenty big enough. i keep the pond well filtered and the ponds water is circulated every two hours through the filter and the UV bulb. over time the fish have developed the waxy looking scales and one is worse off than the others as it is starting to effect the fins and gills too. i have been able to get them out today to take some pics.

if any one knows what is wrong could they please let me know as i want to get them back to a good bill of health asap.

the two i have pictured are the worst affected but the third seems fine apart from one small spot.

cheers in advance

gavin

It is defo carp pox it usualy shows its ugle head in the winter when it gets colder but it can also show up on a weak fish that may well have a problem and by the look of its tail it looks as if it has some fin rot. As bcfc said have you tested your wate ie PH,AMONIA,NITRITE,NITRATE to check all leves are ok. but pox its self is harmless and will just go in time

i just bought a testing kit today and everything seem fine, is it usual to have two that are hit by it and one that is ok. or does it just depend on the strength of the induvidual fish.

ive done a lot of reading over the past week and have found that there is no cure for carp pox, but is ther anything that can be used to lessen the symptoms.

with regards to the fin rot is there anything that can be done to cure that or is it a time cure.

thanks

For the fin rot there are a lot of treatments out there your local koi dealer will sell or some salt baths will defo help and as for the pox i have some that get it over the colder months and some that dont they do thend to grow out of it but its like a cold sore you can never get rid but it comes and gose its a type of herpies but compleatly harmless and not contages. but back to the salt bath you can get bags of salt from your koi dealer and you will need 3oz per gallon when giving a bath if you want me to explane how to do it just ask and ill explane not a problem

Right the salt to use is pond salt most koi/fish shops sell it in 25kg bags but not salt you buy in the supermarket!! you will need 2 bowls that are both big enouth that the fish will fit 1 with just pond water and the other with pond water but desovle 3oz of salt per every gallon of water in it so if you only put 1 gallon add 3oz 2 gallons 6oz and so on make shore you have an air stone in each bowl then catch the fish with out streeing it out to much palce in the bowl with no salt let it setel then lift it up and transfer to salted bowl but make shore all the salt is desolved as undesolved salt can burn the fish's belly and fins leave the fish in there for 10 min's he may toss around for a bit but he will soon setel after the 10 min's are up trancfer it back to the bowl with just pond water for a min then it can go back in the pond but dont pore any water from any 2 bowls back in the pond. This wont help the pox but it should help it's tail look better this can be done every other day if feel it needs it but try not to strees it out to much hope this helps

PS as bcfc said what test kit do you use as some are a load of cr@p ie the test strips the one you will want is the api fresh water test kit with all the little bottles of solution

i cant remember the name of the test kit i bought but it was one with all the induvidual bottles of solution, every thing seems fine withe the water quality so un sure as to why they are so stressed.

the water temp is reading 15 degrees too so its not particually cold id say its about average for this time of year. im looking into replacing mu UV bulb now in the filter to a 55 watt one which should help a bit more as i dont think the on that is in it now is really sufficient enough.

whats the best salt to use have you got any recomendations or is it just called pond salt.

so basicaly im just giving it a salt bath for ten mins and back into the with just pond water one settled it can then go back into the pond. and repeat treatment if required.

thanks again
