thank you once again.

Unfortunatly I cannot move the fish to anywhere safe, we have no other pond or qt.

I will do another full water change tomorrow and I will also go to our nearest koi shop to see if there is something I can buy quickly. I will have to cancle a direct debit, but better to save my fish and get a nasty letter than to have them all die.

How toxic is the nitrite to fish. Will they die within days?

Im going to try some googles. and then I will post here.

dont be worring you can buy salt cheap and it will have a good impact almost straight away , just try and do the water changes , and dont panic , i just read a article on sturgeon and they live happy in salt water , a lot of dealers even add salt in there tanks to get them breeding better .and koi enjoy it to the only down side is getting it back out ,after

Hey.

Got some filter boost today, which is supposed to reduce the nitrite over night, so added that after doing another water change today. I hope to see a difference tomorrow.

Not so sure how long the sturgeon can do without food. I will do a water test and then see if I can in fact feed them.

My amonia level isnt too high, but slightly up. so dont want to rock the boat too much.

found this for you ....

All About Sturgeon

Without doubt sturgeon are most over sold fish on the planet. A bold statement but I have heard they cure every thing from blanket weed to being vacuum cleaners.
Well as most of you have noticed sturgeon are not any of these.

This page is a basic guide to sturgeon. Most of these items are mentioned on other pages but it seems people are unable to find it ( What I mean is people don't want to look for it, they want to know NOW so here it is ). I would suggest you read the rest of the site as it will give a more detailed covering of the subjects.

Sturgeon Like:
Sturgeon need proper food.( Not wheat germ or Cereal based foods. )
Well oxygenated water. Use an airpump through out the summer months to back up the main pump.
Filtered water ( unless in a lake)
A large pond minimum 1000 gallons ( 5000litres) for sterlets.
For other species minimum 2000 gallons.
A back up pump in case of main pump failure.
Sturgeon dislike:
Strong chemicals, formalin, BKC, ( These can be used at a lower dose than you would for Koi, except Formalin with Diamond sturgeon as they generally die a week after treatment ).
Low oxygen, they will die long before other fish, so no ' the other fish are OK' this does not work with sturgeon .
Lack of food, they bend in half and either lie on the bottom or somes times float. If they have got this far it's to late.
Warm weather, this lowers the oxygen level .
Direct sun light, they are dusk till dawn creatures and like the dark best. So have some shade for the fish to shelter under.
Problems.
Nearly all problems are either food or oxygen related, so rather obviously :

Always make sure the oxygen levels are good. ( Buy a test kit they are not expensive. )
Use the correct food.
Malnutrition.
The tell tail signs are:

Fish bends in half. Lack of food , to late time to start digging a grave.

Fish spends all its time bobbing up and down around the edge of the pond. ( Its starving )

Fish follows other fish and tries to suck mucus of the fish. ( Its Starving.)

Oxygen.
This is rather easy the sturgeon become lethargic, and die !

Buy an air pump !

Sturgeon in Aquariums : NO !!!!!! They are not suitable and should not be kept in aquariums or small tanks.

Feeding.
How to feed your sturgeon.

Spring. Sturgeon like any fish become more active in spring as the temperature rises and will need an increase in food, feed alittle and often best times dawn and dusk.
Summer , Sturgeon will be feeding very well in summer so make sure the food is avaliable and the rest of the fish are well fed.
Autumn. Sturgeon will be fattening up for the winter so keep the food going in but watch out and remove uneaten food.
Winter. Feed a few pellets at a time and wait until eaten, before adding more . Sturgeon will feed down to 4C it is very important that you feed them in winter, most sturgeon die due to starvation in winter.

Sturgeon and the Cold. Will sturgeon survive our winters ?

With names like siberian sturgeon , Russian sturgeon this should give it away. Cold is not a problem they will tolerate much colder weather than we will ever get.

Hi Koi master,

I have read this on the main sturgeon site.

Umm maybe they will still die because I used Potasium permangenate. I guess only time will tell, but I had no choice, and could have lost all my koi.

I have only gone two days without feeding them, and Im hoping that this is ok. I will feed tomorrow and just hope the spike after will not be too bad.

Miricles can happen I know it...

Thank you for the post, and your obviously invested time in getting this site back up and running properly.

I have indeed missed it.

Hi Kanundra, the best way to deal with Nitrite is to have fresh water constantly trickling in 24/7 untill the Nitrite goes down or small daily water changes but most of all it takes time and patience, even though the Ammonia readings go down to zero the Nitrite hangs around a bit longer due to the bacteria responsible for reducing Nitrate are very slow to multiply. Ive had the same problems in the past, done water change after water change and the bloody thing still wouldnt go down it took weeks and weeks for the Bacteria to mature in the filter but the constant trickle of fresh water kept it at a safe minimum, if you do this make sure you have an overflow in the pond.

Hi Karl, unfortunatly even with major water changes its not budging. We don't have an over flow in the pond, plus it would negate actually having the heater in the pond also, as the temp would then be too low.

I will just keep trying, everything I can.

yes the amonia is going down, but like you say its because the other bacteria have been affected that the nitrite hasn't,

Default Thanks

Just to let you guys know.

The Nitrite has come down, at last its still not ideal, but at least its not criticle any more.

It is 2.0 and not 8.0

Will I still see any problems does anyone know?
