Hi
i have a koi about 6" with a large ulcer, i have been treating it with a product called ulcer swab and wound sealer for about 6 weeks once a week. all other fish are fine and all are feeding. the ulcer has not got much if any better. the pond is not salted or heated so temp is about 12C at mo. Any ideas on what i could do to speed up recoverery before winter really sets in.
cheers.
i will be catching the fish tomorrow for treatment so could take pic if wanted

hi
sorry to hear of your troubles . you really need to get the fish into some heat if you can as tissue regenaration dosent really take place below 18 c so at any less you wouldnt expect to see any signs of healing. as for a speedy recovery depends on heat. has the koi shown any signs of improvement since you have been treating it and if the ulcer is as big as it sounds then i would go with a antibiotic injection , again some heat , salt at 1oz per gallon( to help with water ingest through the ulcer (osmosis regulaurty) and general stress relief ) and sabbacistun . really you could do with a treatment tank so you can get the koi into some heat ( probarly the no 1 factor in a quick recovery) . personnaly i would be concerned about a fish going into winter with a open ulcer as come spring time the wound would quickly overcome the koi. wether it be bacterial , fungal or parasitic .
i hope this is of some help . paul

Another thing you could try is to use a paste of Pottasium Permanganate applied over the wound area <advoid eyes and mouth> and either cover that with wound seal , orahesive or propolis spray this works at lower temps to seal the wound but will not speed up tissue growth
use melafix after treating the koi topically ,i would use peroxide and iodine at first then place in melafix it really speeds recovery and growth FAST . you will see an improvement within days.i have tried and tested this treatment many times and not lost a fish using this treatment as i have in the past with many other products.as said salt and propolis are both great products aswell.let us know what you decide and i hope your koi makes it,good luck.
O.k some pics of the koi. has healed a little but not much. i have no treatment tank and cant really heat the pond.
will add salt as soon as. is propolis better than wound seal?
I would go along with Extreme and use propolis, but through my own similar experience earlier this year, at that stage the only hope of a full recovery is an antibiotic injection as well. However the main factor in all treatments mentioned above is heat.

Any goodkoi dealer near you should stock it or search on internet as most sell it and can send it to you. I would also try to find out why your fish has an ulcer. It could be as simple as it knocked itself or you may have a bacterial.problem in the pond. Get scrape done if you can. It is that time of year where these things appear and are harder to cure due to the colder temperatures, unless you heat the pond.
