3 Of My Koi Died Today :-(
Hi
Unfortunately we lost 3 koi today, a 27" Grass Carp, 26" beautiful Sanke and a nice goldfish, i have that horrible feeling that they have died from a lack of oxygen
I observed the sanke yesterday taking big gulps at the surface and then making large bubbles and also other fish in mid water barely swimming with the gills working hard
We have only one airstone and a venturi that doesn't bubble (We have bought 2 grundfos pumps only last week to get it working again, but havent got round to fitting it) this is for a 4000 gallon pond with 20 koi and 20 goldfish
I feel really gutted that I hadn't rigged something up. I have the hose going to aerate the water now and they are swimming freely and some are gathering near the hose where the pond has a bit of air
My question was, do you think I am on the right lines with the aeration?
The koi didn't have any blemishes or wounds, when i netted them they had their mouths open and the sanke's gills were open :-(
Cheers
Jamie

get around to setting up extra oxygen now before your others die , it will be well cost worthy the price of an air pump compared to replacing your beloved fish out ways the cons doesnt it,good luck but dont delay do it tomorrow not the next day.air pumps are invaluable by using the hose you are changing your water boundaries all the time but it is better than nothing, hope you get on top of it.

Re: 3 Of My Koi Died Today :-(
Sorry to here about your fish Like Koiman I put a couple of extra stones in last week but even then at the peak of the hot days i could see my fish were toiling so what I did as a temp measure was to use a length of 1.5 inch solvent pipe a 90 degree bend one end and a 45 degree bend other end and put this into one of my water returns on the pond wall and put it up like a periscope the water came crashing out back into the pond and supplied the extra Oxy they were looking for. I know it may sound a bit Heath Robinson but it certainley worked

Re: 3 Of My Koi Died Today :-(
Sorry to hear of Your loss. I think You should install a good size air pump. One air stone on a pond that big ,in My opinion is not enough. I only have a a 2000 gallon setup. On that I have 135 liters of air going in a minute. It goes to two 9 inch air diffusers, and a 12 inch long AIr stone. I also have a trickle tower with 7000 litres of water passing through it an hour, and the water returns to the pond by falling 5 inch`s so loads of air there aswell. If You dont like The water disturbance you can always stick your airstones in Your filter chambers.
Get on Ebay You will pick up a have tidy pump for sensible money.
Then hopefully Your problems will be behind You. You get so many benefits from air, Better bacterial growth, better Koi Growth, better water quality and more important better fish health.

Re: 3 Of My Koi Died Today :-(
Hi
Cheers for the kind words and advice, we will be rigging up the grundfos pumps asap and also I am going to get some extra air in there one way or the other
Hope everyone else's fish are ok for this summer, I have learnt a very important learning curve as I have only been into koi keeping for 1 year and a little dependant on my dad to help out with the running of the pond
I feel gutted that I didn't know what I know now and wish I could have done something to save them by getting more air in the pond
I guess its the nastier side of koi keeping, and unfortunately I am learning some hard lessons
Regards
Jamie

I was just wondering if you have your hose going through a dechlorination unit ?? otherwise the water you have pumped in could affect the bacteria in your filter and drive the Nitrate and Ammonia levels sky high
Regards Mik

Re: 3 Of My Koi Died Today :-(
If you are going to use grundfos pumps dont forget to coat the inside of the pump with G4 or they will rust or fit a conversion kit.
