if it is raising like a pine cone and you have a pretty good idea that it might be dropsy then in my honest opinion you might be better off to eradicate the problem totally( ill be slagged off for that comment) how many fish have this problem . if i remember a post from carol yamakoshi vircon s can stop the spread of bacterial ailments from fish to fish . what are you treating with ? good luck paul

normally one of the first signs of dropsy are bulging eyes then the pine cone shape starts to appear dropsy is not always caused by bacterial or viral infection it can be caused by kidney failure congestive heart failure and many more unknown reasons i dont think it is a water quality issue more of a element involved in the water . if you dont have isolation for any koi you may think have dropsy then it will always be a issue . personnaly i dont think the koi in the picture has dropsy the infection seems to be to contained in one area and there are no bulging eyes on the koi(well not that i can make out) how many fish do you have?

Looks like the start of an ulcer due to a bacterial infection. Id add 1/2 ounce of salt per gallon of water and treat with acrivlavine. If this doesnt help you may need to go down the antibiotic injection route.
HI
I had a similar problem early in the year, why I was building my new pond. My fish were kept in a vat and the nitrite levels got high as the filter was not very mature on the vat.
I removed the fish and placed them in a heated quarantine tank and used Kusuri Sabbactisun over a 2 week period. It worked a treat and it doesn't harm the filter, the only problem is that its expensive if you have to treat the whole pond.
One of my fish had raised scales and the other had raised scales and red marks from stress and possible nitrite burns as the nitrite levels were very high. I done lots of water changes to rectifier the vat and added some salt at 05 oz per gallon to help the rest of the koi from nitrite poisoning.
So check water quality and try and remove fish to a quarantine tank if possible.
Hope all goes well.
