Default My first post, please help, it`s killing my koi

Hi, my first post on this great forum is sadly a disturbing one..
Over the last 2 weeks i`ve lost a total of 5 of my best koi (9" to 14") to an internal virus of some sort..I think dropsy but no raised pine cone scales?
Again today another koi died, they all appeared to stop feeding 2/3 days prior to death and then red bruised patches appeared and also in some cases 'popping out' eyes..
What have tried to do help? water tested for ph(7.9) nitrate ok.., just done a partial water change, and added the first dose with cooking salt and acriflavine..please advise and help me save the rest from the same fate..thankyou. see attached

hi there sorry to hear of the problems you are having. it certainly looks bacterial , i would try sedating these fish and removing any infected scales give the site a good clean up then treat with something antibacterial you could try hemisulphate , acraflavine is a bit weak. how much salt per gallon are you using? also how is your ammonia and nitrite . sorry i cant be of more help but im sure someone on here will be able to recognise this for you . good luck . paul

hi there
you will need half ounce of salt per gallon to be effective so yoiu need 21kg of salt ,i know it seems like alot as for salt burns as long as you dont just chuck it in you should be alright . i dissolve mine in a watering can with tepid water about 3 kgs a time some people just sprinkle it over the water surface a bit at a time either way is fine as long as you dont do to much in one go. but remember there are some treatments you cant use once you have added salt formalin and potassium permagenate just to name a couple and salt dosent break down in water so only partial water changes will remove it from your system. good luck cheers paul

1/2 oz P/G should do the trick. As paul said dissolve it in water b4 adding it to your pond. This could be as simple as gettin a large sterile bucket and filling it with pond water and disolving the salt in it b4 returning it to the pond. Simply stiring up the water with your hand will be ok after the salt has been added to the bucket

ohh ye if that doesnt work try bathing individual koi in upto 3-4 oz P/G for a few mins. Keep a close eye on them though in these high dosages. Any signs of rolling over and return them straight back to the pond.

High again, an update of how it is going, i followed the above advice and added 21 kgs of salt to my pond and borrowed a heater and the pond temp has been at 18 c for the last 2 days, i `ve ordered hemisulphate which should be here in the morning...can i add it to my pond straight away or will i have to wait until the acriflvine i put in on sunday wares off...also as a note i turned off my uv`s on sunday so as not to destroy the effect..
Just a point of note the koi seem sedate and unwilling to feed, is this the effect of the salt treatment..regards, alan ??? oh, and i`ve not lossed anymore fish since the salt addition..
