Reputation Level: | Re: My first post, please help, it`s killing my koi Sorry for the delay in readings, i`ve had problems getting on the forum (has anyone else?)...
Here are my readings as of 24/6/06
ph=8 on test kit, 8.4 on hanna meter (might need a dose of buffer solution to check calibrate)
ammonia=between 0.15 and 0.2
nitrite=0.2
nitrate=15
kh=9
As stated before i`ve tried acriflavin, salt, proflavin and lastly vircon s..
Since my last post i`ve only lost one more koi with the same problem..
I`m doing regular part water changes every few days..but the ph on tap water is a problem it`s fixed at 8.4 which to me seems high. I`ve got propolis wound treatment thru from nt labs for the wounds, but i dont have anything to sedate to apply, can i use salt to sedate the fish and at what dosage to do this?
As stated i`ve got around 1500 gallons with uv and a kockney koi 10000v multibay filter,
brushes in vortex
jap matt in bays 1 and 2
perlag (which i`ve soaked overnight in salt) in bay 3 with 4 air stones
flocor in bay 4.
Unfortunatly i dont have a bottom drain so i use a blagdon 4000lts/hour pump to supply the filter, which i think is where my problem may be..LACK OF WATER thru filter the pump seems to struggle i think and i`ve got to daily suck out crap from the pond with my pond vac and floating brown algae from the top, ( no skimmer)..
I have ordered which should be here tuesday a 15000 lt/hour pump and a yamitsui in pond pre filter..(to stop having to clean my brushes every 2nd day).
I also have a vortex but i dont know if i can fit it to the gravity return to pond i presume it needs a high flow of water to suck air in ?
I also thought of putting k1 in the 2nd last bay of the filter (with air) to try and up the filter volume (bacteria properties) what do you think....
Thanks for the advice so far and please answear any of the above questions...regards Alan |

You really need to phone a local dealer and ask them to do a scrape on the Koi, this will probably reveal your problem. |

Reputation Level: | Re: My first post, please help, it`s killing my koi I`ve just done a scrape and found nothing at all, i`m still putting one tablet of vircon s in per week.
I currently have about 7 fish with large holes in their sides and my large yellow ogon has half his mouth deformed with a large hole...
Nothing else in pond at the moment other than vircon, i`ve tried propolis in food and on wounds 3 times but the wounds are not healing, and i think it kills smaller fish as i`ve lost 2 overnight after spreading it on each fish..
All my readings are checked daily, the main ones amonia and nitrite are good...anyone want to come and look...what next? thanks :'( |

It sounds as though you have a very bad bacterial problem, as a last resort I would drain and clean out the whole pond and start from scratch, the stress might finish off any weak koi but if you leave the pond as it is you will probably lose them anyway, you may find the cause of the infection when you empty the pond (a dead fish or frog under a fold in the liner for instance)
Good luck
