Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â* Â*Having a problem with koi this winter.Have lost about six 12 to 14 inch koi There doesnt seem to be any visable marks on them.I thought it was strange that the koi were fairly active in mid winter but not eating anything and one by one over the space of a couple of weeks they were found upside down at the bottom of the pond.Im fairly new to koi keeping only about a couple of years so im still learning Any advice would be welcomed

Reputation Level: | Re: koi problems Hi,
The first thing you need to do is check your water parameters, you need to test for Ammonia and Nitrite, you can buy test kits from your local dealer. It could be toxic poisoning that is poisoning your fish which means your filter is not doing the job it suppose to do, thats assuming you have a filter, it could also mean your flow rates are wrong. Could you give us some more details, the size of your pond, the size of your filter and how long it has been running for, also how many fish were in the pond ?
Could you also do some water tests for Ammonia and Nitrite and post the results, this is most important. |

Â* Â* Â* just in from work thanks for replies. My pond is 12 ft by 8 ft by 4.5 ft deep built with a liner with 2 rows of brick on top. My filter is 2 vortex units and a 50 gallon tank. The first vortex has brushes in it the second has flocor and the tank has a layer of alphagrog with sponges on top
the flow rate is debatable all i know is that the pump is an aquamax 10000 but not all is going through the filters about half is going straight back into the pond .My water temp this morning was4.5 degrees at the bottom and -1.20 at the top I have only got 10 koi left who seem to be alright at the minute hope this infomation is helpfull will post ph and other tests later

Reputation Level: | Re: koi problems HI Scotman,The best thing you can invest in is a heater,Your koi are struggling to stay alive at those temperatures, below 10 centigrade their imune system shuts down.Koi are not strictly cold water fish their body temperature is around 22 centigrade. Our winters are just too cold for them to function properly. You could try putting a cover over your pond to stop the wind chill,[leave an air gap] Unfortunately koi in unheated ponds sometimes do not make it over winter. All the best Carol. |
