Hi m8 your best bet is to get a scrap done, have you looked at the interpet manual of koi health lots of pictures & advice could be anchor worm, chilodonella, costia, epistylis hope this helps TA Paul s might get book from library or buy about £14.99
Hi m8, found this pic, does it lookÂ* like this...
One of the most common fungal infections of Koi. The fungal spores will grow anywhere on the Koi, including the gills, initially germinating on dead tissue. Their threadlike hyphae release digestive juices which break down the tissue so the fungus can absorb it, as the fungus grows these juices start breaking down living tissue.
Fungus on the body appears as cotton wool like growths, it is hard to tell if a Koi has it in the gills, but if it hangs at the surface gulping for air it is likely.
Carp pox. A virus that produces solid waxy lumps on Koi. It will not kill Koi and is generally harmless, but can look unsightly. It is most often present in small Koi and in cold weather, clearing up disappearing when Koi grow and in the spring when water temperatures rise.
hi all
thanks for all the suggestions, i found out it is anchor worm plus the secondary infection, i was told to use acriflavine,is this the best cure or can anyone suggest anything better
thanks alot paul

Hi Paul,
Anchor Worm looks like a small white or greyish splinter/cotton thread protruding from anywhere on the Kois body, if you have Anchor Worm you will need to remove it/them with a pair of tweezers. The problem with Anchor Worm is that you need to remove the entire worm and head of the crustacean which will be buried in the skin or gill tissue, dont just pull halve of the body away as this will lead to secondary bacterial infection and ulceration so you will need to anaesthetise your koi to remove it properly. Dip you tweezers in some potassium permanganate paste to make the worm release its grip and for easy removal.
There are products that treat Anchor Worm, these include Paradex and dimilin, both work well.
Sounds like you already have secondary infection, so my advice to you would be to clean the site up as best you can and spray some potassium permanganate directly onto the site using a small spray bottle, ntlabs do a liquid version.
Acrivlavine will not kill Anchor Worm but would help with the secondary infection if you are heated, if you are not heated it probably wont help at all, the same with Paradex, you cant treat the pond unless you are heated in this cold weather, however dimilin/dimlin can be used to treat Anchor Worm at any temperature.
Hope this helps.
