Reputation Level: | Coton Wool Hi Everyone
I have just noticed today that two of my Koi have what appears to be "cotton" wool like bits on them - not very much but it is noticeable. Is this some form of parasite ? My pond is un-heated but I have had fish flicking all summer due to what I thought was high Ammonia & Nitrite levels given the pond is new, however now its turned cold all water parameters seem fine. I did treat the pond with Formalin & Malachite in May.
Are you able to treat the pond during such a cold spell ?
Thanks
Paul. |

Does it look like white waxy lumps ? If so it is more than likely to be carp pox, if it is carp pox this is nothing to worry about. Carp pox is cold related and will disappear as the weather warms up, this usually appears in younger Koi and can be unsightly but will not harm the Koi.
On the other hand it could be a fungal infection caused by bacteria which will spread and will need to be treated, you cant treat your pond unless you are heating it in this cold, so you will have to treat the Koi with a topical treatment.
Can you get a decent photo of the problem ?, if not, I suggest you take one of them to a reputable Koi dealer to identify the problem before it gets any worse. |

Reputation Level: | Re: Coton Wool Sounds like they have a fungus problem. This is normally a secondary problem brought on by some other infection or water problem that is makeing the fish stressed. If you have no way of quarantening and warming up the fish to treat with something like cloramine-t I would sugest mild salt baths of 1 and half ounces of pond salt to a gallon of pond water for half an hour every 3 days.(In a bath not in the pond) a good place to look for koi heath problems is here>>> http://www.koivet.com/html/articles/...0&%20Disorders |
