Been sorting through some of the Tosai, the Kohaku were pretty easy but Showa simply do my head in.
Take these two for example, they have both put on the best part of 40cm growth in 8 months, but their bodies are more eel shape than Koi and the Sumi development hasn't happened.
So is it ditch or patience for these two?

If they were mine i would persevere with them. You know the growth potential
is there, and only being Tosai sumi & beni take time to develop. If you have older fish from the same bloodline or breeder, that you can compare them against then only you know the likely outcome.
Dave,
is the beni fading to show white skin or is sumi developing under the faded area? The beni does seem thin on the 3rd showa but has much sumi to come imho. If i was going to thin out the 3rd showa would go.
if you were to look at the pattern police you would look at the koi and try to imagine the koi with no Beni on it .... would it make or look like it will make a good shiro utsuri? then look at the koi and imagine it without any sumi at all..... would it make a good Kohaku? in the ideal showing world it should be both the combination of a good kohaku and a good shiro
Looking at the top 2 photos and the potential if any they could have then id say 1st 1 id let go as dont think it would improve much more, the pattern edges might tighten up a bit but dont think much more.
The 2nd 1 id keep hold off for at least another season as the beni pattern is well placed and if the sumi comes through in the right places could turn out a good koi but this is a waiting game for me on this 1
It will all depend on yourself as there your fish and you yourself know what space you have available for them
Lau - yes pattern police is what does my head in whats for sure there not gonna be more beni and it's just dreamland as to if and where the Sumi comes through.
O - 3rd Showa has a body on it that makes me think it may grow to a decent size, far better than the other two "eels". The weak beni onthe shoulder has just a touch of black under the scales but as a whole it is messy at the moment.
Paul - Yes I agree, whats for sure I need to see how this lean body shape develops and think that no2 may at present look better than "Loveheart" no1.
