What is it?

KENWOOD DMX5020DABS is the latest CarPlay & Android Auto 6.8” model – ideal for getting your apps on the go. However you listen to music or plan your journey this unit will have something to offer; We'd go as far as saying Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are must-have features on a new car, but now numerous big-name aftermarket audio firms provide compatible devices of some description. We tested Sony's option a few years ago and, while Kenwood's isn't a like-for-like alternative (technology moves fast and that review's now three years old), it is more advanced. Depending on the connected control unit, source name may be displayed "EXT-MEDIA", "*-MEDIA" or CD Changer ("CD-CH"etc.). With this smartphone application you can control most basic functions of the receiver over the Bluetooth connection of the paired phone (iPhone or Android).

The key selling point of the Kenwood DMX8020DABS is its Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility. If you haven't used these before, they're brilliant – just connect your phone (via Bluetooth or old-fashioned USB) and you can access all your favourite apps on the move. Or some of them, at least (Spotify, Google Maps and Waze to name a few). Best of all, it will bring your car bang up to date with access to the very latest in smartphone connectivity. Which is the smartest choice to go with your phone? How we tested them There's not a lot going against the Kenwood DMX8020DABS. There are cheaper options, but you kind of get what you pay for. Not only does it do pretty much everything you could possibly want from an aftermarket infotainment system, you can also rest easy in the knowledge that Kenwood is one of the biggest names in automotive audio tech.

Multimedia GUI Features

So, ultimately, yes you should buy a Kenwood DMX8020DABS. It's an easy way of getting modern infotainment into an old car and no, there aren't really any catches. It looks the part, is easy to operate and is well worth the investment. Compatible with Hi-Res Audio which provides greater sound clarity and detail than standard compressed digital audio formats.

The unit support Voice Command, allowing you to perform actions without touching your phone. You can initiate calls, play music or perform other tasks just by speaking voice commands and keeping your hands on the steering wheel where they belong and concentrate on the road ahead.

Note: If your "USB" connected devise does not function (e.g. iPhone4, etc. ), please re-connect your "USB" device using " iPod 1 USB port". DAB+, also known as Digital Audio Broadcasting Plus, provides crystal-clear audio quality and interference-free reception. DAB+ uses the AAC+ audio codec, which allows for greater compression without loss of audio quality and is comparable with CD audio quality. It uses a more efficient coding system to transmit digital data resulting in more stations being able to broadcast on the same frequency and allows for the delivery real time data services such as such as the station name and logo, presenter, song title and album artwork. Wireless Mirroring for Android is a groundbreaking solution for seamlessly displaying and controlling your smartphone apps on the receivers’ large screen without cables. The feature is available on compatible Android phones. Some features, applications and services are not available in every region. We might upgrade our phone every couple of years to keep up with the latest technology, but most of us won’t renew our cars quite as often. This can leave us looking enviously at the newest models with their DAB radios, voice activation and perfect integration with smartphones. I'm only suggesting these based upon their physical appearance rather than technical knowledge but hope it helps. With the number of others using Kenwood stereos, I also surprised that nobody else has come forward to at least say whether or not things are working as they should. I might not use MW but like you, I would be a bit peeved if it didnt work as they advertise it as having AM and nobody ever says that AM reception might not be possible.
