Default food debate "ding ding"

This topic seems to be erupting on every forum !!!

so lets debate it .
what do you feed , what would you feed , if the cost wasn't prohibitive , if you could , would you do your own ??? what would you put in it ???

or more importantly , what you wouldn't put in it !!!

Such questions arise in every hobby, the danger is worrying too much about it.

The joke amongst fellow saxophone players is that you should probably move to the South of France, grow and cut your own cane and make your reeds yourself, if you want to be sure of getting the best.

Personally, I've always tried several variety of foods (there's new ones coming onto the market every year) and settled on the one which is a balance between quality and cost. It's what's written on the back of the pack which is important, not the claims on the front. I also don't think you can detach the question of food too far away from water quality.

In the final analysis, I think the fish should have some say in the matter.

Seasonal Greetings DHR , are you saying that given the right food the fish will actually talk.

Don't yours?

Season's greetings to you too.

What I mean is it's no good taking the attitude, "It'll stay there until you eat it! It's good for you, do you hear!?"

Hi Steve

Think I know where you are coming from.

But and it’s a big BUT koi keepers come in all shapes and sizes and any discussion on food needs this as a rider, I would guess that for the majority of koi keepers a 5 kilo sack or two will last for a season, yet for some it's a mere snack.

Indeed it’s a little dangerous talking about feed rates that some Guys employ as for many the stock doesn’t require it and more importantly their filters couldn’t cope with it and it could lead to a whole host of problems if they were inclined to blindly follow.

Ok shoot me down as being a koi snob - but I think that’s the reality.

From my personal point do I wanna risk ruining the odd fish or two in the pond that have a little quality by skimping on the quality of food ? Humm no - But I have to accept this comes at a price, I can control this to an extent by the stock levels, less fish = less cash on food.

What’s for sure is that Hikari have priced themselves out of my budget.

Hi Steve,

I have fed just about all types in the years gone by, like many trying to find what is "the best diet". Over the last couple of years I have fed a mix of Hikari wheatgerm (25%) Yamoto (25%) and Nobori (50%)

This for me and the Koi works well, it's not to bad on the pocket, water quality stays contantly good and they seems to do well on it.

Yes it's a compromise as I used to feed wheatgerm and saki-multi mixed, but with the price and amount of food I go through I just couldn't justify this anymore.

I'm a firm beleiver in the food company and their research can provide a better diet than I could make up/mix, so no, I wouldn't do my own. I would rather suppliment the Koi's diet with some prawns, lettuce, water melon etc.

interesting getting our forums members views .

as its been mentioned , i'd love to go full hikari , but it has just priced itself out of my market , i need to use a min of 1.5kg a day when the koi are feeding , and at £230+ per 15kg , thats a whole heap of dosh , just to flush down the bottom drain .

theres a reason i put this thread on , as ive been toying for a few years , with making my own , and finaly next year , i'm going for it .

ive been a big fan of eaone health , but as its no longer available , its finally got me going , and doing research ect .

i'm quite shocked at how much filler is actually in koi pellets , very scary !! also ive leant that carbs v protein is a must , not just for visual waste , but also the dreaded ammonia .

as dave has said , koi food is subject to XYZ .

would it be something you guys would consider ????

if i had the know how and the means to make my own food i think i would make my own as that way you know what they are getting and how much because like you say there is a lot of filler in the foods you buy readly from the shops.
