There are many many reasons on fish growth and how fast or slow they will grow and its just about trying to get as many of them bang on as you can.
Some have fish in tanks and just try to keep them as warm as possible thinking the fish will grow better as the water is warmer but this is not the case and i personally do not take my water over 23/24c.
Just a few things to think about are temperature, water condition, food and of course genetics and type of fish as some fish will grow better than others for instance a Chagoi will easily grow quicker than a Showa.

Hi Gaz
I understand in what your saying here and i have tried to give it the best that i can do. so would it be right in thinking a temp of over 24c is not really worth doing. what do you think to a growth rate of 9cm in 4 months, is that ok, slow or good.

Having the temperature too warm can do more harm than good as it can have an effect on the colour on fish growing on so you need to keep an eye on them when growing fish on indoors and with heat.
9cm is good Mark and the other thing to think of it not only how fast it is growing but the size and shape of the fish as its easy to grow a fish on especially from Tosai but getting the shape, size and keeping the quality can be a tough one to achieve sometimes................trust me i have blown a few ££££ on Tosai

mmmm funny how you say about losing colour, i brought two fish about amonth ago, a showa and a kohaku both at about 35 to 40cm. both are in the growing on tank and temp is at 20c. the kohaku has already lost lots of its red which i am gutted about. is this because its inside under a 40w bulb. the showa is looking very good and going well.

Growing fish on inside can be a right pain getting it all spot on and can cause all sorts of issues but it all stems back to as i posted above its not just one or two things but a bunch of things that need to be spot on.
Think of it a bit like making a great curry if you miss out any of the ingredients out it wont taste as good and the more ingredients you leave out the worse the curry will get
The fish need plenty of light and the best light is of course natural light so all we can do is the best we can. I have a Metal Halide (similar to the link) above my tank and have to say since running it i have seen a improvement in the fish.

I’d agree with Gaz, particularly on the temps, you can force the fish by running high temps but in my book you just run the risk of ruining the fish - a range of between 20 and 23c is the way I go.
A stress free environment would be my goal Mark, this would include having sufficient mates to keep the Koi company.
One things for sure, throw the “rule of thumb” guide to filtration out of the window when you have a small system with young Koi in it.
As to your Chag; you are the person best placed to answer the question, and provided you are happy with the growth then that’s all that matters.
I have seen many people growing on fish that seem to grow fast but later on the fish go down hill and the quality takes a right old bashing
Now that i have said quality again the "quality" of the fish and parents have a massive angle on how they will turn out, trust me guys i have waisted a fair few £££££££££££££ on cheap fish hoping to get a stunner and it just ain't gonna happen
But the better the fish is to start with the more chance you have of getting one to turn out good so try to keep everything spot on and stable and go for the best you can afford it will save you a few ££ in the long run.
Mark Dave is bang on about the filtration on a smaller system when you are growing Tosai on you have to have a good system that can deal with what you throw at it and you have to keep it nice and clean with good water.
Hi Gazza
Hope you don't mind me asking? 1. What is the TDS in the tank 2.What's the Ph in the tank 3.What's the KH 4. And lastly the Temp.
Thanks
Shevy
Hi Shevy,
Sorry mate got carried away and forgot your questions
The TDS of the tank at the moment is 220 and a PH of around 8 Yes not where i like it but was messing around and left the supply water on but normally I run it at around 100 and a PH around 7ish and temperature around 23c but it can go up a bit in the summer.
The KH is very low somewhere round 1 or 2ish but as i am basically always flowing water in and feeding food the system seems to work well and balanced.
One thing i forgot to mention was the stocking rate i don't overstock and although a small well filtered will be able to cope with a fair amount of fish it can have an impact on the growth of the fish.
